There have been a lot of forum entries, and some fairly active discussions, on issues of mutual intelligibility within various language families.
Here's a fascinating website by a Dutch group that studies this issue among various European language families (Germanic, Romance, Slavic), with a wealth of studies to download, as well as a game to play.

Do any of you happen to know the language that is spoken when you play the game and are
supposed to make sure your audio is set up correctly?
Sounds very charming :)

That one was Swedish (maybe it's different each time you play the game, I don't know).

I haven't played the game, but I found a lot of interesting publications at the site.

I was first shown a list including German, Yiddish, Dutch, Danish, Frisian, Swedish,
Norwegian, Faroese and Icelandic, and eventually selected for...Danish. It's a 100% aural
test, no written text. Probably the only language where I had no chance (though give me
Faroese, and I just might change my mind).
