Around a year ago, I could understand Japanese to about an N3-N2 level (I think? I could read
most manga almost effortlessly and I could watch anime and understand 60-80%. I was in the middle of reading The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and found it challenging but not impossible). I haven't used my Japanese at all since then and after trying to read a volume of Death Note I've realised that I seem to have forgotten a whole lot. Has anyone else had to deal with this? What's the best way to reactive my Japanese? Surely I don't have to start from scratch? I just want to reactive my passive skills, I've never spoken Japanese in my life haha. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I think a lot of people here have been through a similar experience. After only a year when you had decent skills
already it should come back quickly. I would say just struggle through the reading and the anime, maybe looking up words in the dictionary on occasion. Things that you forget and relearn often end up being stronger for you than if you never forgot them. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

Yeah, I would say jump back in :) Better to think of your Japanese as rusty rather than
forgotten-- I think attitude is huge when getting back into a language. Also, I think passive listening while you're doing other tasks might help. You'll be taking in the language without stressing out about how much you used to understand. 1 person has voted this message useful |
