Hi,
I'm currently refreshing my Swedish using textbooks for highschool students. (We have loads of them in
Finland.) I found these examples in the text and I'm wondering about the use of att before a verb. Why is it
sometimes used and sometimes not? How do I know when to use it? Why in the last two examples you don't use
it? My intuiton would say differently.
1. Man ska aldrig övertala sina vänner att göra sådant de inte vill.
2. Det är ju inget kul att veta precis vad folk kommer att säga nästa minut.
3. ...och till och med vägra att prata med mina vänner.
4. Bara de låter mig vara som jag är så är det OK. (*de låter mig att vara)
5. ... så att han inte bara försöker dra nytta av dig. (*försöker att dra nytta av dig)

Försöka is one of those verbs that I feel work with or without att (a Google search for "försöker att" gives 287 000 results)
Auxiliary/modal verb + infinitive never take att:
Jag ska/kan/måste/vill/behöver/et.c. äta, du ska äta, han/hon ska äta, vi ska äta, ni ska äta, de ska äta...
I assume that låta belongs to this group since it seldom stands alone.
Does this make any sense?

Thank you, it makes sense now. I must pay attention to it in the future to get a feel for it.
