I have a blog where I link great websites, books, software and most importantly,
YouTube Videos made by other polyglots. Does anyone have any suggestion about new topics I can write about? The blog is about people who are learning two or more languages right now. I am mostly interested in the people who are making YT videos. Is there anyone interesting, or remarkable I can write about. ??? I don't know if the YouTube polyglot community is interested in IALs, but one blog I like to read from time to time is Robert Winters' "The Joy of Languages." He has no YouTube channel I know of.
He is an Australian novelist, who wishes to remain anonymous right now, who dreams of writing in other languages. He's currently studying French, Indonesian, Afrikaans, and Occidental (aka Interlingue). He's been blogging for a year, and has tried out several IALs in the past year and has come to the conclusion that Occidental is the best IAL for now, with some others being strong contenders. He also changes his mind quite a bit, and interacts with readers a lot. His current project is translating the French novel "The Charterhouse of Parma" out of French into Occidental and recording the audiobook. His readers are contributing by translating the novel into other IALs, occasionally also recording an audiobook. The only thing I can say is a little bit of IALs goes a long way. Another blogger I like, who DOES have a YouTube channel, is Mithridates (aka Mithradates on YT) of Page F30. He writes about a lot of other topics other than languages, such as space exploration and technology, but he is a Canadian translator living in Seoul who also likes IALs. Hope this helps. ETA: IAL = international auxiliary language. Robert Winters is a pseudonym he uses to stay anonymous. I thought my post didn't make much sense saying what his name is but wanting to be anonymous, LOL. Mithradates doesn't have many videos of himself speaking many languages, just the IAL Frenkisch so far I think. And Naomi, I like your blog. I am generally interested in any blogs specialized on language learning. So I will have a look at your blog website. Thanks for quoting the link!
I don't want my You Tube videos to appear on the blogwebsites of other people. So I don't give people permission to spread my videos. My videos are under my copyright and - if applicable - I would only post such a language video of myself on my own blog. But a link to my You Tube channel is o.k. Your video was hilarious. I don't think I've ever seen Steve get that belligerent in one of his videos, though. Maybe on some posts in this forum, but not in one of his videos. To Naomi Chambers: I have already read your blog and seen the videos at your Youtube channel (which actually is the only place to see Katrudy after her mysterious disappearance).
Let's first consider Youtube in isolation. As Fasulye I generally find that people should look at Youtube videos in the original version at the original location under the name of their creator, although short quotes of course is OK - and links and favorite lists are even better. But that being said I have had much fun watching the videos in your channel. Embedding in blogs is quite another matter, and as long as there is a clear reference to the original video and its creator I don't mind it. Youtube videomakers have some limited control over where their videos can be used, but given that the original videos can be seen freely it is not a big thing to see them in a window on a blog, if just the credentials are given. But your blog also has a lot of material about specific languages etc., not only about other polyglots, and that's refreshing. I would like to give my two cents to something that can cause a bit of confusion: the difference between (A) embedding a video with a link to Youtube, and (B) downloading a video from Youtube and uploading it to your own website. In the first case (A) it is always the original video you're seeing! You just create a linked window in a blog, the blog is linked to the location of the video in Youtube, and you see exactly the video you would see directly on Youtube. It is not a (pirated) copy of it! There is no copyright issue as Fasulye said. Embedding a video doesn't mean that you ignore the copyright or that the author has lost his/her copyright. Embedding a video should be seen as a chance to spread a video through the internet. You don't need to make any reference, since the reference is the fact that the video has just been linked and appears in a "window". Whether a video has been embedded or it has been clicked/searched on Youtube, it doesn't matter. Every view is still being counted. Also, if you right-click an embedded video, you can choose the option "Watch this video on Youtube". If you pay attention to the title appearing on an embedded video, it is exactly the same. After watching the video, you will see the same video-suggestions you see on Youtube. In the second case (B), the video has been downloaded from Youtube (or elsewhere) and uploaded to the blog. THEN you would need a clear reference. But this is not the common practise, since (1) you/we/people don't own the copyright, and (2) bloggers have limited space for uploading files and media (normally to 1 GB, at least on Wordpress).
