I have too many unread books and I keep buying more, so my new challenge is to read 25
books representing 25 countries until January 1st, 2012. To make things more
interesting, these books will be in 10 different languages, very few of them English or
German. Apart from justifying the purchase of more books, I am also hoping to learn
more about the world's cultures and to discover authors who are not commonly
translated, and of course to improve my reading ability in various languages.

My plans in detail:

So YOU'RE the one!
Your website was one of the first ones I saw when I was first getting into Korean.
A little browsing turned up another webpage, and now I feel like learning arabic...

Indeed, I came up with this approach for
learning the Korean script.

Now I published a book applying the same approach to the Arabic alphabet. Get it from

I second that. I love the diversity! Looks like it's going to be a quite interesting project and should be a lot of fun too.

Sounds like a great project. Good luck, Judith. I'd like to be able to read books, magazines, or newspapers in at least 6 languages.

The languages are:

French
German
Spanish
Italian
Chinese (Mandarin, I assume?)
Dutch
English
Esperanto
(Modern?) Greek
Latin

I already finished the book set in Egypt, which I had started before the challenge, and
the one in Turkey. Now I'm reading the one in Greek and it's much harder because it's
excerpts of classic Greek writers.

I just published a blog post about how you can make it fun to read in a foreign language:
http://www.learnlangs.com/blog/2011/11/03/what-makes-reading -fun/

Michael, I recommend starting with Esperanto; once you're able to read in that language,
French, Spanish, Italian and even German will come easier.

Thanks for the suggestion, Judith.

I tried dabbling in Esperanto earlier this year and liked it, but I was thinking about learning more "useful" natlangs before I started conlangs. How long does it take to learn how to read Esperanto? I've seen reading courses for natlangs that take a few hundred hours, and since there is the claim that Esperanto is 4 to 10 times easier, I assume it would be a relatively short time to learn to read Esperanto.
