I'm wondering if something like the Folio Society exists in other languages, particularly German. I'd love to have some of those illustrated editions in the original language...

For German:

This online directory ZVAB has rare books in orignal form. It's a lot of fun to browse through the various subjects. I don't think there's one place where you can get newly published original editions. Not to say the books wouldn't be worth publishing again, I'm just not sure if there's a big enough market for such a thing.

What you could do is try searching a German book by title and adding the words "Originalfassung", or "Originalausgabe". Sometimes Amazon.de will carry books in the old form-- like the Grimms Märchen

hope that helps..

I'm not looking for reprints of first editions, just pretty books in their original language.

Just imagine this, only in the original Latin. Or similar treatment given to Goethe, Proust, etc. I'm a sucker for nice books, and while there's several publishers printing books of this quality in English, I haven't seen anything comparable in other languages.

For anyone who might be interested, Folio Society does occasionally put out bilingual texts...I have a lovely illustrated edition of Horace's Odes from them that has Latin and English on facing pages.

There are some beautiful, high quality books published in other languages as well. However, I don't know of any
non-English language publishers who specialises in this the same way as the Folio Society. I have a few books from
Folio, and the quality is excellent in all regards: the paper, the binding, the typography, the illustrations etc.

i really really like Diogenes, their layout for every book looks nice. But you seem to be looking for super specialty stuff, i'd never pay $200 even for a Book of Hours
