Rock in Brazil seems to be downfalling nowadays. Th most famous band here is called "Restart", and it's the gay version of Justin Bieber, with guitars. |

Justin Bieber is not exactly the epitome of machismo... |

Chico Buarque’s “Construção” is an interesting song, good for language learning and with a political subtext (written under the dictatorship). Milton Nascimento’s album “Clube da Esquina” has kind of a dreamy sound. Early Caetano Veloso is also fun, same for Jorge Ben. The compilation “Beleza Tropical” is a nice sampler. And then there’s Os Mutantes, although they sometimes sing in Spanish, in a satirical vein. All of this is Brazilian music.

If you want something good, you can search for old stuff like "Raimundos", "Legião Urbana", "Skank", "Jota Quest", "Capital Inicial", "CPM22", "Mamonas Assassinas"...for starters =)
There are a few fine new bands, like "Jay Vaquer" (awesome), "Vanguart", "ForFun"... |

I second that. Add Dead Fish and Sugar Kane if you like hardcore (:

I'm not sure about the modern Brazilian scene, but the Cidade de Deus (City of God) soundtrack had me hooked when it was first released.
Tim Maia - No Caminho Do Bem
Seu Jorge - Convite Para Vida
