vonPeterhof - good point, and I thought of that, but by that measure, can you say that every Muslim can "speak Arabic" merely because they can memorize some Koranic verses, probably with terrible pronunciation and without much understanding of the meaning, let alone of Arabic in general?

I mean, I've seen interviews of the Shah on YouTube where he speaks flawless French and very good (if accented) English, but I can't imagine him conversing in Arabic, which is what I mean by "speak Arabic"...

By the way, how did you manage to get "3 persons have voted this message useful" when no one voted for any other message in this thread? Pretty amazing stuff! I guess you must be popular here, huh?

Though I am not a muslim, I think Arabic is sine non qua for learned Muslims, once
even the Koran translations are quite discouraged untill for prayers.

Maybe, but the Shah of Iran was hardly a "learned Muslim" - in fact he was hardly a Muslim at all... maybe a "Muslim in name only".

Now, if you're talking about those Ayatollahs and mullahs, then sure - I'm sure their Arabic is better than their Persian, if they speak Persian at all.

But my question was about the Shah of Iran...
