I have now announced our new video on several places in the internet and I hope that our recorded Skype discussion will give all listeners some "food for thought" and some extra inspiration!

I listened to the recording a few hours ago, and I noticed that the 3 ladies in the recording (and myself) are all childless. I like children and have worked with them professionally, but I am not a parent.
I realize that 4 people does not a trend make, but I wonder if it would be something many female polyglots have in common. Obviously, that's not true of all of us. For example, I believe Solfrid Cristina is a parent.
I am curious about that and thought of posting a poll. I just haven't figured out how to word it.

That's true, we three women in the video all don't have children. And I have Skype contact with another female polyglot without children. So far Solfrid Cristina is the only female polyglot I know about having children.

What about male polyglots, I wonder? Are they often childless, as well? The raising of children still being largely the responsibility of the woman in most societies might be a strong contributing factor to the relative scarcity of female polyglots. Language learning is a time-consuming hobby.

Thanks for posting it, Fasulye!
The observation about all of us being childless is interesting. I'm not sure if it's a trend among female polyglots or not, but I suspect we might see a similar trend amongst women who take up all kinds of ambitious pursuits (like becoming CEOs, etc). Learning lots of languages does indeed take up a lot of time, and so does raising children! It would be difficult to do both. (Hats off to you, Solfrid Cristina!)

Well, in all fairness I took a break from doing serious language studies for many years after getting kids. I was at the University of Warsaw to do a Polish language course the month I found out I was pregnant with my first daughter, and I was not really able to start any serious language studies until two years ago when my youngest was 10 years old. All I have done in the mean time is some maintenance.
The languages I can actually speak are from the period when I was free and single and could do immersions and spend as much time on language studies as I wanted to. Learning a language from scratch while raising kids and working full time and doing a host of other activities, is turning out to take an almost Herculian effort - without any impressing results to show for it.
So enjoy the time withouth kids, girls!

Your experience with raising children as a woman doesn't surprise me because I have a married sister with kids and a married sister-in-law with kids and see that both women are so tied up with all their tasks (both have a part-time job as well) that they have no opportunity to develop any time-consuming hobby. And both women of my family are always in stress!
Luckily, I never wanted to have children, so I don't have such a hinderance to balance out. And now I am definitely too old.

Like Fasulye, I have never wanted children for myself, though I am not yet too old. (I'm only 37.) I also agree with Jana's observation that it's probably true of many ambitious women that they are likely not to have children. For such an obvious point, I had failed to think of that before her post.
As a person without a spouse or children, I have the time to devote to my main interests, music and language, which are very time-consuming activities. They are not without rewards, and I am sure others on this forum would agree with that fact.
