He's spent most of his adult life (over 25 years) learning languages, sometimes for more than 12 hours a day. I wouldn't be surprised if he could speak several of them fluently as well as read them.

This is unusual, because he usually tries to sidestep the issue of how many languages he knows.

And that comment about Esperanto... seriously, what was the point? (especially as a native speaker of the actual "world language")

Yes, that is strange. I'm sure he knows that Esperanto isn't supposed to be the sole world language.

The whole article seemed kind of strange. I wonder how much liberty the writer took with the professor's words?

I think it is possible to read a couple dozen languages and more, with years of dedication. Passive understanding and proper pronounciation, once learned, are much more unlikely to be lost or become "inactive", like speaking can.

As for speaking, it may be possible he can speak a similar amount with fluency, but not at the same time, save he has a gift which of course is never to be discounted. But if he does it means virtually no one else could replicate his success just my mimicking his lifestyle.

When you've devoted time to many languages (or musical instruments) you see similarites all over the place. People who know only one don't see that. Of course it's possible to speak many languages at a high level.
