Hi everyone. I am from the US, and I speak some French and Hebrew in addition to my native English. I know some French, but right now I am concentrating on learning Hebrew in anticipation of a trip to Israel this coming fall. I've been studying for the last 6 months, and have probably gotten to the point where I could hold simple conversations except for the fact that there's a dearth of people to do that with here in the US. So if anyone reading this intro is fluent in hebrew and would be willing to play pen-pal, that would be awesome.

Language skills:
  • French - Spoken is good enough for simple conversations; my vocabulary and listening comprehension are not typically up to the task of more complex ones. Pronunciation and accent are quite good, reading comprehension is fair (the written word gives me more time to puzzle things out than the spoken).

  • Hebrew - About the same level as the French, except for the fact that my reading/writing is pretty poor overall, first because of the different alphabet, second because it is usually not possible to guess the pronunciation of a word written in modern hebrew (aka without niqqud vowel dots) and third because I haven't found many resources for practicing my reading/writing. I do know all the characters and the niqqud dots, I can read most of the words that I already know without niqqud (or any word that has niqqud), but as far as I know, when it comes to modern Hebrew there's no getting around the fact that you need to know the spoken language pretty well before you can really tackle the writing. Also, the lack of similarity between English and Hebrew makes guesswork nearly impossible, which means you can't look at a word in Hebrew and make a guess based on "sounds like the English X" as you could do in French.

Hey there! I studied Hebrew for 8 years in grade school and then promptly stopped studying in high school and college. Now that I'm in my junior year, I've been trying to resurrect my language knowledge and have been searching for a partner with whom I can practice.I would be happy to exchange messages with you, and maybe Skype too for some verbal practice? Send me a pm if you're interested!
