Hello everyone!
I'm a student from Germany and my journey of language kind of began in elementary school, when we were forced to "study" (it wasn't really anything like studying though...) French to encourage exchange with neighboring France. Unfortunately, that exchange pushed me more out of the language than into it, and when I moved on to the next school level, I decided to go to a school that had English and not French (the latter being much more common in my area at that time) as the first foreign language.
I was extremely motivated about English as a child and wanted to know more and more English. With 14 or 15 years, I started watching American TV shows and movies in English instead of my native German, which seems to have improved my English skills a lot.
As for French, which I had to take in school again a bit later, it just never went well. Right in the beginning, I was quite a good student in the language, but then I became extremely lazy because I didn't like it and didn't feel any progress, either. I was way too lazy to remember all the grammar rules and in the end, dropped the French classes as soon as I could. Today, I'm feeling kind of sorry for that and also slightly ashamed. I'd really like to get the knack of French somehow. I know a surprising lot of vocabulary, probably because I know English and took Latin in school as well, but I know little to no grammar. This is one of the things I'd really like to start working on soon...
Apart from what I had to take at school, I've also been studying Japanese for almost 3 years now, as I'm majoring in area studies at university and had to choose an Asian or African language. Our university classes for Japanese were extremely strict and time-consuming, but progress was much faster than in school, too. Right now, I'm staying in Japan for a year abroad, where my Japanese also has improved a bit again but actually not as much a I had hoped. Nevertheless, I'm somewhere between the JLPT N2 and N1 level now and am planning to take N1 soon, so I probably shouldn't complain ;)
Apart from getting on French again and improving my Japanese, I'd also like to start on Korean. And of course, I also want to improve my English further, but that's mostly about nitpicking and correct word usage. When I go back to Germany in August, I also want to take some Academic Writing classes at my home universiy since I feel that's the area in English I lack most skills in.
Other languages I'd be interested in learning are Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Finnish (or to be short: all that big Scandinavian stuff ;) ) and Polish. But even apart from these, there's a whole lot of languages I find so interesting and where I go like "Oh wouldn't it nice to be able to speak those..." I hope I'll be able to at least somewhat master a few of them...
