I'm sure it's really obvious, but what's an "ABC"?

American Born Chinese (I think). I hear the term 'ABC' batted around a lot at an Taiwan expat forum I visit so I'm assuming that's what it is.

Bingo. I remember hearing it in America, as well, so it's not just a Taiwanese thing. People will also talk about CBCs, by the way, for Candian Born.

Those must be terms restricted to the US and Canada then as I'd never heard them until I came to Taiwan.

Considering how the term was created, I'm not surprised. The only other place it might be appropriate is Australia.

Apparently Peter Ustinov spoke English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish fluently, as well as some Turkish and modern Greek.

Based on a TV interview I once saw, at least his German sounded totally native to me. If memory serves he was also well-known for his ability to do many English accents.

Apparently, Peter Coyote speaks German, French and Spanish. He learned Spanish in three months, I read.

Quote:
Marin County's Peter Coyote is the only American in the delightful French comedy Bon Voyage, and to this unsophisticated ear, his French sounds as good as that of co-stars Isabelle Adjani and Gerard Depardieu. Coyote learned to speak the language in his 40s, when he got the notion of someday spending part of the year in Paris. Just because he's fluent, though, doesn't mean he had no problems making the movie.

"English and French are extremely different for an actor,'' Coyote told me. " With English, we breathe in the middle of a sentence and take breaks, but the French talk until they are out of air. If you try to act like you do in English - you know, method acting - which makes perfect sense for an American, if you do that in French, you look like a psychotic.''

I never thought about that. Is this true?

I don't know if three languages count (especially if one is from Europe), but I've read Monica Bellucci speaks English, French, and Italian.

Shakira speaks and sings in English and in Spanish, and awhile ago on wikipedia, it stated she was also fluent in Portuguese, Italian, and Arabic. It's since been removed, though from her background, I would not be surprised if she was at least proficient in Portuguese and Arabic.

Does it matter where one is from? I'd say that three languages always count irrespective of location.

I don't know wether she speaks any other language, but Jodie Foster is fluent in French. Her accent is extremely good!
