From the Romance, have you considered Italian? It is quite different from Spanish and

Hi @Cavesa,
unfortunately I don't know if I can learn a language as difficult as Italian.
I would prefer something easier ;)

But then, this should go without saying. But some replies make me wonder if it really

No, go for it, trust me, I can help you out! Maybe you can give me some tips to improve my English, too.

:)
Of course I was joking @Cavesa :)
Please take my comment as playful.

@daegga, I think that @Serpent's comment didn't want in any way to be offensive. I
read it as "since you're native German speaker and you speak Swedish, you're most
likely to find Danish pronunciation easier than someone without a background in
Germanic languages" or a very weak background as in my case.

@kanewai, I think that in your list Indonesian is the only very convenient choice.
With Turkish (by the way, I saw many of the crappy Turkish movies like "Turkish Rambo"
and "Turkish Star Wars" just to laugh with some friend) I fear that not having ever
studied an agglutinative language it would be a tough experience. The others in your
list are, indeed, a fat chance :) Apart of Latin, but they don't produce many movies
in Latin nowadays :(

@Cavesa, the slavic are also good candidates due to my interest in that family. What
about Czech? Are there movies, podcasts, radio, literature and good stuff?
About Hebrew I fear that it is at least as hard as Arabic :(

This is probably not the answer you expected , but If I were you ,living in the netherlands , I would focus
intesively on Dutch , lots of input , novels plus audiobooks , radio etc as well as interaction with people
since you live there . I would keep on that till you reach a good C level in comprehension regardless of
how
well or bad you speak it , speaking will come with time and practise. By doing so you 'll have a solid basis
to build upon if you decide then to learn German and /or a scandinavian language . Meanwhile I would
keep up
both French and Spanish . Try to be consistent with Dutch up untill that point and I am sure it will pay off if

you decide to take up other languages later on ,no matter which .

@albysky, since when I'm studying Dutch I started to study all the languages that are not
Dutch while going slowly with Dutch. I have little resiliance with this language. I
really want to learn it but I have really little will to study it. Sometimes I manage to
be constant for three months but then I need to pass to something else.
I will learn it, slowly but I will learn it.

Well but a great thing about HTLAL is exactly that, recognizing the limits of your experience and forecasting how it can be different for someone else. I *did* have some background in Germanic languages and I found listening to Danish extremely hard until I got some experience with Swedisn and Norwegian. It was like this (sorry if my comparison offends anyone). Even most Scandinavians can't understand Danish as well as Swedish/Norwegian respectively, and while many would likely agree that it's easier to understand than to pronounce, I've never heard such comments from someone who didn't already speak a Scandinavian language.

I love Danish, and it will be really cool if tristano chooses it, but it won't be easy. Heck, I spoke it in a past life, and it's still not easy :D

As for doing your first agglutinative language, I think there's no reason to be concerned. They're very logical. If you want to study "difficult" languages like Russian, Persian or Mandarin, you need to learn to wrap your mind around a very different way of thinking.
(Hm, Turkish used to be written with the Arabic alphabet and has lots of loan words from it, and I suppose from Persian too. Sounds like a fun choice for you? :) But just like the Scandinavian trio, I think it will keep you busy enough all year. Which has the benefit of not having to choose again later in the year)

Yes Turkish really sounds like a fun choice :)

So let's analyze
- Scandinavian trio: well, learn it as a trio is very convenient . Issue with this choice: I have to start today. And I have
to be quite constant because it means that I'm doing three language instead of one :P Good stuff is that I will
improve my understanding of one language by studying one of the other two as well.

- Turkish: intense! but very nice

- Polish / Croatian / Serbian / Czech: also intense! but good due to my interest in Slavic languages, plus head start
for Russian.

- Greek: fascinating under many levels. On the minus point it is less convenient than the scandinavian trio, less
charming than Turkish and less Slavic of the Slavic ones :)

- Indonesian: like Greek but easier :)

Any new proposals? :)
