I find x can be pronounced a bit lighter than щ but it's a much better approximation.

I'm just beginning to learn Russian, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but what helped me with pronunciation was the following:
The FSI Russian course (link) has in the first lesson on the alphabet (p37-38) with a lot of minimal examples like ба–бя, ди–ды. If you download the corresponding part off the audio files and cut it into pieces (for example with Audacity), you can create a nice little Anki deck full of questions like: What did you just hear? сы, зы, or зи?.
It helped me a lot to learn to hear the differences, whether I am correctly pronouncing them myself I can't check with this method of course.
