Doing SAFMEDS for my characters, I can see a pattern in what is happening based on my numbers for the particular decks.

One of the things floating through my head is whether attending a Mandarin church service at this point would help at all or just be a lesson in frustration.

I've been listening mostly to audio material from Taiwan for several months now. Recently I got out my material with the heavy Beijing accent (includes collouquial slang). Afterward when listening to a light Beijing accent, there was the distinct sense of hearing more sounds than before. Going back to my material from Taiwan, it seemed that my listening comprehension jumped a small bit. Today I visited a small Mandarin speaking church and talked to a few people there in Mandarin. Afterward there was again the sense that my listening comprehension jumped a little. I'm thinking of visiting some of the other local Mandarin speaking churches now.

The SAFMEDS numbers are getting under control...of course I started the next reading lesson so those numbers will go out of whack again.

My daily routine now is doing several SAFMEDS decks (usually 2 to 4) a little reading, plus listening. I’m starting to push myself to listen to as many different accents and different people as feasible. The trigger is a comment by my friend, from Beijing, basically that any speech in movies or other audio has been sanitized.

Today I asked the fellow, from Jiangsu, before asking him a project question, 你的辦公室開的嗎 (is your office open? Simplified 你的办公室开的吗?)   Afterward I was wondering whether 你的辦公室開了嗎 was a better choice. The woman from Hong Kong said both are correct.

It feels like I just passed over a learning hump. The pace is now slower, though that was expected. The other thing is I came to the self assurance that I will know the language well. Several things happened this week;
1...The people at the church that I visited last Sunday truly wanted to help with my Mandarin. This was also expressed at the other church I visited at Chinese New Years.
2...The Mandarin speakers at work are starting to talk to each other in Mandarin while in my presence. One of them said that it's good for me.
3...I looked at a set of 12 successive reading books (previously given to me). The set is targeted for primary age school children and is in traditional characters. Interestingly, the books were published in Beijing and read from right to left. Anyhow, I looked up the new characters that are on the last page of the last book. They were listed as being in Hong Kong grade levels 5 and 6. So now I have the materials to tackle after finishing my Yale Mirror Series books.

This years' fall overseas visit may be postponed. Because of the fall target, I've been extremely heads down on my Mandarin... now am considering whether to ease up a bit.

Yesterday I visited a third Mandarin speaking church and was pleased with how much I was able to understand. This visit there was hardly any speaking practice. Also I've started mining a blurb from the church bulletin which is reinforcing some of the characters which tend to fall out of my head. The first church I visited used some materials in simplified with others in traditional characters. The last two churches used all traditional characters.

This weekend finished lesson 8, of 15, in my reader.

To help with vocabulary retention and reading skills, I've ordered the audio for my reader. The audios are out of print so these will be used cassettes. The other thing is the tapes come with another copy of the reader and I already have two copies (older editions). Will have to see whether the new copy is a newer edition of the book.
