Working thru the mechanics of using SAFMEDS. Getting the mechanics down will take a while (that's OK). I have a lot of trust in Applied Behavior Analysis methods. I also have to look at graphing the results. Today all the written cards were worked, timing one set....50 cards in 1 minute 34 seconds. This includes some fumbling, as mentioned still working on mechanics. May go to decks of 40 cards each...1 1/2 minutes is pretty long for this sort of thing. Anyhow based on the number wrong, I'm not ready to add any new characters ....need to get to about 80% accuracy of the current cards. This keeps me honest about character recognition, which is good!

I tried the AJATT idea of a jelly bean, or other very small piece of candy, after working a character. After a timed deck review, a more valued candy was used. The problem is that I'm sugared out now. Need to rethink the use of small reinforcements in character work.

Did some verification that I am correctly hearing sentences and associating the right characters (pretty basic ones). Got the difference explained between “wo3 kan4 dao4 le” (我看到了) and “wo3 kan4 jian4 le” (我看见了). He said they are almost interchangable; there's a slight difference of distance. Generally with “wo3 kan4 dao4 le”, he can reach out and touch whatever it is. “Wo3 kan4 jian4 le” is for things out in the distance. I asked about the R in "mei2 shi4" (没事儿). This person, from Jiangsu province, mentioned that he generally pronounces it with the R (儿).

Reworking my routine to be more consistent learning characters (recognition and hand writing). Still thinking thru the use of reinforcements in character work.

Also started exploring this site which was mentioned by someone else in the forum (sorry, can't remember who to give credit to); http://listen.bjradio.com.cn/

I talked to the 4th person that got the Shrek movie audio clip. This person is from Taiwan and speaks both Mandarin and Taiwanese. She basically said the voice over actors/actresses speak with a Taiwanese accent. Also she said there are Taiwanese expressions in the movie.

Found that the Heisig book for simplified characters can be ordered now. This is welcome news. Some of the Matthews stories haven't clicked, even after reworking a particular story say 5 times.... it must be something about how my mind works.

Been trying to mine sentences using the subtitles on my animated movies (kids movies with pretty straight forward dialog). These are movies where I am starting to memorize the dialog because of repetitive listening. Two movies have subtitles that don't match the dialog. One movie has Chinese subtitles only in traditional characters.
Bang head here ==> X <==

I was browsing the internet and found some Singapore radio stations that broadcast in Mandarin, some Taiwan stations and also heard some brief blurbs from stations in various mainland provinces.

Have just started listening to sped up FSI modules using Windows Media player at 1.4x. Doing this after listening to Beijing talk radio and realizing how sloooow the speech is in the FSI dialogs. This is one reason the AJATT site is less than enthralled with language learning audios. Anyhow at 1.5x the dialog sounds a little like chipmunks. I'm no longer drilling the FSI material but instead am listening and sometimes mimic'ing a portion. It seems the AJATT site is right about being able to speak after hearing something a gazillion times as I have my first phrase from one of the animated movies.

This week has been light on character work due to the job. As usual my listening comprehension work was hardly affected. The dialogs from my movies are becoming more understandable with time....keep picking up words and sentences. Settled on listening to the FSI audios at 1.3x the normal speed. I was reinforced by hearing some of that new vocabulary on Beijing news radio. Ordered some more movies and then realized the majority of my recorded material will have southern accents (generally very slight).

Thinking about translation and connotation. In my Shrek movie, the fairy godmothers' help is translated as 幸福快了 (xing4 fu2 kuai4 le). That initially surprized me. Now am thinking of talking to my various Mandarin speaking friends, who are overseas born, about this translation.
