Super Challenge update...my half super challenge looks like this for books.
Books completed; 1...西遊記 (graphic novel) which counts as 1/5 of a book 2...巧克力冒險工廠 (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), 250-260 pages 3...第十四道門 (Coraline), about 180 pages 4...2nd volume of a childrens edition of 西遊記 5...3rd volume of a childrens edition of 西遊記 6...the 4 volumes 霍爾的移動城堡(漫畫版)...Howl's Moving Castle which had hardly any text. I'd be surprized if there was enough text among all the volumes to make up one short pamphlet. Books partially read which don't count for the challenge...These are listed to help with my motivation. ...1/2 to 2/3 of 飛天巨桃歷險記 (James and the Giant Peach) ...1/2 of 1st volume of a childrens edition of 西遊記 ...3/4 of 喬治的神奇魔藥 (George's Marvelous Medicine) ...2/3 of 女巫 (The Witches) by Roald Dahl I finished the movie portion of the challenge eons ago. I've been reading the second volume of "Sayable Chinese" which is a translation by Yuen Ren Chao (趙元任) of Alice Through the Looking Glass. Am flitting around the book instead of reading it front to back. I read too slowly to be able follow along with the recording. I listen on and off to the audio. I was feeling a bit depressed about not knowing every character in the book since it was written for students of Chinese. University students are expected to know about 1000 characters after 2 years. Then I read the preface. The audio was intended for use by students. The book was written for use by professors and not the students. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

There are current US news articles about some college athletes who read below high school level, even after completing 4 years of their university program. One article mentioned that it's difficult to improve ones reading level in 4 years of university given commitments to other activities. I may be primarily reading childrens books for a looooong time. Most of what I've been reading lately is geared toward 7-8 and 9-12 yo.

My motivation was been fluctuating a lot.
I've started watching 江苏卫视官方频道 on YouTube. They have a meet the bachelor type show which can be pretty interesting. I also look at the viewer comments posted in Chinese. Think starting at about 45-48% thru Neutrino, it started being pretty easy to rack up the daily target points. I'm now at 57.8% thru and the VSR (variable schedule of reinforcement) is starting to include daily activities that have no points with the reps (repetitions, hit counts) still accumulating. From an ABA perspective, this is generally done to wean the subject (me) off of dependence on reinforcements (activity points here). This can be equated to creating an addiction to gambling...in this case it would be to addict me to do things in Chinese regardless of what happens. This would be in addition to any intrinsic value that I find in doing various activities in Chinese.
I'm finally starting to write emails to native speakers using characters. In my case, characters have to be converted back and forth (simplified/traditional) depending on the other person. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I've starting helping out my Sat evening Mandarin speaking group by periodically watching their kids during the meeting. While some forum members will scratch their head as to what does this have to do with learning Mandarin, it provides a very different and important reference point with which to relate to the adults. I'll be ordering movies from Amazon in mainland China again. I asked my overseas Taiwanese chat partner about the word for the filling inside cream puffs and eclairs. A friend from the Shanghai area uses the word "ice cream" when talking in English. She tells people that cream puffs and eclairs have ice cream inside. My chat partner answered with 冰淇淋 which was a real surprise. It seems that's used in Taiwan for the filling. 60.9% through Neutrino.
Still creeping along on characters. I'm healing from surgery and so won't be visiting any Mandarin speaking groups for a while, though am still chatting with my overseas Taiwanese language exchange partner. Just finished reading 波西傑克森：索貝克之子 (The Son of Sobek). Still trying to decide what movies to order from Amazon in the mainland. I predominantly buy American movies which are dubbed in Mandarin. Unlike some forum members, I don't feel the need to mostly work with materials which originally were both written by and for Chinese. I also never had any illusions about eventually being able to pass for a mainland or Taiwanese born native speaker despite being ethnic Chinese.
