I forgot where I read the recommendation for the movie 青い春/Blue Spring, but I just watched it and it was quite good.

I really liked the Csezh/Slovak movie "Želary" and the Serbian movie "Life is a miracle". And no one has yet mentioned the Russian/Finnish/Saami "Kukushka/The Cuckoo". All are war time movies and all are very sweet :)

Tout Va Bien is a great French film by Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin. Language learners can really sympathize with Jane Fonda's inability to properly maneuver between her French and English accent when she's forced to switch. I couldn't stop laughing when that happened because of sheer nostalgia.

Tricoteuse, you're right, Life is a Miracle is a great film, too. Continuing that kind of trend, "Underground" is also a very good film, I thought.

Check out the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman; if you were only to see 1
you would choose from between The Seventh Seal (Det Sjunde Inseglet), and Wild Strawberries
(Smultronstället).

I just want to emphasise that Bergman is an important director ... his films are considered as peers to Kirosawa.
They would be shown in every film school in the world. Especially if you watch the Seventh Seal, you will
recognise the much copied scenario of grim-reaper negotiating with the protagonist (just as you will recognise
copied elements of Kirosawa films). Both directors are extremely important, and I dont want to have Bergman
lost in a sea of "recommended Polish / Brazilian films".

(I am not Swedish, but this director is important. See the Seventh Seal (in B&W), and then Wild Strawberries. If
these 2 do not make you feel like seeing the rest of his films then drop them.)

Yes he is really good and definitely an important director not only in Sweden. "Fanny och Alexander" is highly recommended.

Two posts about Bergman and no mention of "Persona" or "Cries and Whispers"?
