Hey all, let me start by apologizing I can't write in any of the scandinavian languages :(. but.. I am constantly learning :).

I wanted to open this post in hope it would get sticky, and provide a place for all learners to get a chance to ask for a specific song translation - since I've noticed it's kinda hard to find decent translaions, plus there are just too many missing.
(for example : the norwegian folk-metal band named LUMSK, has 3 full albums and not even one song completely translated over the entire net!).
*I personally would love to see their full work translated here some day :)*

I also believe it could be a rewarding process for the translators, especially when it comes to folk music which is often written in an old variant of the language in hand.

To make it organized I suggest the person who is asking for the translation would post an external link with the original lyrics (if possible) so that the translaor could then post the 2 lyric sets side by side, so it would be more comprehendible for those who whish to learn from it.example

Let us set one rule to help put things in order : please check throughly over the net before posting a request here.

p.s - I think the music thread should also get sticky and stand side by side with this one.

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------

and with this notion I would like to start (if I may) :

song
lyrics
language - Norwegian
* for these type of folk / history-myth based songs it could be nice to get an additional commentary about the origin or the myth itself (hope I'm not pushing it ;)

!thanks all translators!

I don't know Norwegian, so I can't help you translate the song. You have an interesting idea, but what I want to do is post my own translation of a Swedish song so I can get some practice. First, I should mention that my translations from Swedish to English tend to be very literal and usually can't be sung. The song is Vi kommer att dö samtidigt by Säkert!

Dansade brevid dig (Dancing beside you)
Ville gå hem vid fyra (Wanted to go home by 4)
Men jag stannade till sju (But I stayed until 7)
Utan att våga säga mer än hej (Without daring to say more than hi)
Du är rätt ung (You are quite young)
Jag är äldre än du (I am older than you)
Men du röker så jag skulle säga att vi är plus minus noll (But you smoke so I would say we are plus minus zero)

Vi kommer att dö samtidigt, du och jag (We are going to die same time you and I)
Vi kommer att dö samtidigt, du och jag (We are going to die same time you and I)
Vi kommer att dö, dö (We are going to die, die)

En hund jag kände dog för en vecka sen (A dog I knew died a week ago)
Och några dagar senare dog hans hundkamrat (and one day later died his dog companion)
Dom kände varandra fanns ingen poäng att leva utan en bästa vän (They knew each other, there was no point to live without a best friend)
Jag förstod det inte då men nu vet jag vem det kommer bli (I understood it not then but now know I who it will be)

Vi kommer att dö samtidigt, du och jag (We are going to die same time you and I)
Vi kommer att dö samtidigt, du och jag (We are going to die same time you and I)
Vi kommer att dö, dö (We are going to die, die)

Andas, jag kan inte andas (Breathe, I can't breathe)
För det låter så pinsamt kvavt där jag står brevid dig. (For it gets so painfully stuffy when I stand beside you)
För trött för att dölja, det måste vara uppenbart (Too tired to hide, it must be obvious)
åh Kom inte närmre, åh snälla kom närmre (Oh come no closer, oh please come closer)
Snälla kom närmre, kom närmre, kom närmre... (please come closer, come closer, come closer)

Vi dansade i samma takt (We are dancing at the same pace)
Likadana hjärnor som redan tänkt på allt innan någonting hänt (Similar brains that already thought about everything before something happened)
gjort om till ironi rädd för något som känslor men slippa (made the ironic fear that something that feelings avoided) [This line doesn't quite make sense to me literally]
vara smart i kväll. (Be smart or careful tonight)

Vi kommer att dö samtidigt, du och jag (We are going to die same time you and I)
Vi kommer att dö samtidigt, du och jag (We are going to die same time you and I)
Vi kommer att dö, dö (We are going to die, die)

Great idea laban, hope it takes off!

Just in case you're interested, I found this cool little website last month that offers a small but growing community resource for translating song lyrics:

http://lyricstranslate.com/

...you can can also share experiences and advice with current and future language learners and music fans.

5. Allvis

Eg vil hente heim mi brur i dag (I want to bring home my bride today)
snart skal vi hyggje oss heime (Soon we will enjoy ourselves at home)
eg er av tusseætt (I am from ”tusse” family)
og er ikkje verdig henne (and am her not worthy)

Men eg har så sterk ein vilje (But I have such a strong will)
møya vil eg eige (that I will own the maid/virgin)

Allvis er namnet og under jorda eg bur (Allvis is my name and I live under the ground)
Tor er faren til mi komande brur (Tor is the name of the father of my bride to be)
han sa då til meg   (He said to me)
at "denne møya skal aldri (That this virgin/maid shall never).
hentast heim av deg" (be brought home by you)

Men eg har så sterk ein vilje    (But I have such a strong will)
møya vil eg eige   (that I will own the maid/virgin)

Tor han sett eitt krav (Tor have placed a demand)
at eg ausar av mitt hav (That I scoop from my ocean)
av visdom som eg har    (of wisdom that I got)

Tor han vil veta alt: (Tor wants to know everything)
om himmel og alvar - dvergar og sol (About heaven and elfs,- Dwarfs and the sun)
om jotnar og æse - skyer og skog (About jotnar and æse – clouds and the woods)

Og eg har så sterk ein vilje (And I have such a strong will)
brura skal eg ha (That I am going to get the bride)

Han gir seg ikkje med dette (He dosent give up on this)
om meire han vil vete (About more things he wants to know)
om vindar og vanar - om kneggjer og skø (About winds and habit – about neighing and (I honestly dont know what skø means any help?))
om vindstille og lummer luft (About calm and sultry air)

Han masa og masa (He was Begging/nagging and begging/nagging)
om låg og stavstille - om eld og flammer (About low and ”completley calm water” – about fire and flames)
om skadebrenne om skog og djupt hav (About burn damaged woods and deep oceans.)
og alt i livet (And everything in life)

Og eg har så sterk ein vilje (And I have such a strong will)
brura skal eg ha (That I am going to get the bride/That I have to get he bride)

"Og natta ho gjekk    (And the night went by)
og svar han fekk   (and answers he got)
og Tor sa: (And Tor said)
mektig har eg sveke deg, haha, dverg   (I hav fooled you greatly. Haha, dwarf.)
her skinner sol i salen!" ( The sun is shining here in the hall)

Here is a try at translating it. Some explanation for words I didnt translate:

”Tusse” is like a small goblin or a small troll.
”Stavstille” litteraly means polestill and is used when talking about the oceans when it is really calm.
”Jotnar” or ”Jotner” is Ymes offspring, they are the emenies of humans and æser. Yme is a god which was killed and thats how the earth was made. He was killed by Odin, Ve and Vilje. They killed him, because they didnt want it to come more ”Jotner”
”Æser” is the godfamily which most of the Norse gods belong to. Their leader was Odin, but they respectet Tor greatly.

Edit: Wrote it in word first so it looked weird.
Edit again: Removed some spelling mistakes.
