Hey everybody,
Here is just a question about Swedish literature because I know there are a lot of Swedes on this forum. I have learnt Swedish for about 5 months now and even if my level is still bad I would like to have a look on Swedish books in order to know what kind of reading my knowledge of this language enable me. Authors from Sweden are particularly well-known for detective-novel but it's not what I prefer.
My aim is to be able to read "Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige" ("The Wonderful Adventures of Nils") written by the Nobel Prize Selma Lagerlöf but I absolutely don't know if it is a sophisticated text with an important vocabulary. Do you think it could be a good choice for a first Swedish novel ? I have read somewhere it was first written for children. Is is true ? I'm looking forward your advice.

"Nils Holgersson" is indeed a schoolbook on history and geography. You can read it online: http://runeberg.org/nilsholg/
The most important thing is to read something that you're interested in. It doesn't help much to buy a boring book just because the vocabulary is simple. You can also start with August Strindberg, or the nobel prise winners Harry Martinson and Eyvind Johnsson, because "det går lättare att flyga högt än lågt!" Use a translation if there are too many unknown words. It is exhausting to use a dictionary all the time, and "det går lättare att flyga fort än långsamt!" Have fun with Nils Holgersson.

Tack så mycket OlafP. I'm very interested in reading Nils Holgersson to know munch more about Sweden. I have travel a little bit in the south of Sweden but my dream is to have a entire journey through Sweden. This book will be a very effective introduction to Swedish literature but also an good view over Swedish landscape and culture. Thanks for the links, it turns out that my level is not enough well to be able to read it but in some months I think I can do it. After that it will be time to read other books of famous author like August Strindberg or Harry Martinson.
