I would like to hear from people who regularly read and enjoy poetry. I myself have never quite gotten into poetry, but I am considering doing so in the hopes of broadening my vocabulary in my languages. I am at a reasonably advanced level in German and French, but poetry and other forms of "high literature" are still just out of reach. I discovered Dover has published some bilingual anthologies of poetry for German and French, each with an accompanying CD recording of the poems included. My plan is to study and transcribe each poem, hopefully eventually internalizing them, but with the broader purpose of acquiring a richer, more nuanced (passive) vocabulary.

What do you think about using poetry at an advanced level to develop your abilities? Do you think developing poetic reading ability will increase one's skill in reading prose such as novels? Or do you think poetry requires a separate set of skills in itself?
