Hey,

Does anyone know of some good page-turners written in Spanish? I'm not looking for literary masterpieces like Borges or Cervantes... just some light reading, more along the lines of Stepehn King or J.K. Rowling. Any suggestions?

I highly recommend Arturo Pérez-Reverte, "La Reina del Sur". I couldn't put it down! It will soon de a major telenovela on Telemundo. Pérez-Reverte is a swashbuckling writer who I think will appeal to your tastes.

Any of Isabel Allende's novels. She uses contemporary and engaging language. And her novels are entertaining.

Thanks for the feedback. A question about Allende:

I think pretty much everything she write comes out both in Spanish and English. I believe she's also bilingual. Does anyone know if she translates her own works? Or does anyone know which language she writes in first? Or does she somehow write both version simultaneously?

I, too, am a huge fan of Isabel Allende's work, though I've never read her work in English, however; I have been to her website and in her faq she states the following:

"Q. Do you work closely with your translator? I notice that Margaret Sayers Peden has translated several of your books into English.
A. Margaret and I are always in touch, I believe we have a psychic connection. She does a splendid job. I do not dream of correcting her! In most other languages, however, I don't even know who translates my work. The publishers take care of that."
Isabel Allende Q & A

She is a great writer. I loved her book <<Inés del alma mía>> which tells the story of the conquistadors of Chile through a female perspective. I've read almost all of her books and most definitely recommend her work.

Thanks! I always assumed she wrote in English also because she speaks quite well, if I remember correctly.

Have you read the trilogy she wrote for young adults? I think the first book is the El reino del dragon de oro...

Actually, El reino del dragon de oro is the second one. The first is called La ciudad de las bestias.
