In case somebody is interested, here are results of a poll conducted in 1999 by "Polityka", a popular Polish weekly. The readers voted for the best Polish writer of the 20th century. So these are the most popular and appreciated 20th century Polish writers and poets in Poland:

1. Henryk Sienkiewicz
2. Stefan Żeromski
3. Władysław Reymont
4. Stanisław Lem
5. Wisława Szymborska
6. Czesław Miłosz
7. Witold Gombrowicz
8. Stanisław Wyspiański
9. Sławomir Mrożek
10. Julian Tuwim

Thanks for that rtyhgn85.

I'd also suggest Ryszard Kapuściński for people wanting some Polish literature, fantastic writer who has also
recieved much esteem from Poland and internationally. I've only read the translations, but if the English versions are
as good as they are, then I can only imagine that the originals are outstanding.

For anyone interested in fantasy/science fiction literature, Andrzej Sapkowski is pretty good.
