Hello everyone.
My name is Amelie (without an acute accent on the middle "e", it's important
;)). I've been using Saerlith on forums, games,... for years. I don't really know how I
came up with it, I just threw some letters together and thought it looked nice.
I'm 24 years old, Belgian, and a teacher in the making, with Dutch and English as my
subjects. I enjoy music, languages, horses, my cat, psychology and many many more
things in various different fields. I've been dividing my time between all the things I
love until now, but I feel it's time to start focusing my time and energy on
something more specific. I have chosen to dive into the world of languages completely,
and it has brought me here.
My native language is Dutch. Though I'm Belgian, I can perfectly manage to speak like
a Dutch person, and I can switch between various dialects with ease. I started learning
English when I was thirteen. In English, I can seamlessly switch between a British, an
American and an Australian accent. I quite easily pick up regional dialects and
accents, which I believe to be a great advantage in language learning.
I can manage some French if I have to. I have only ever learned French in school and
unfortunately, I've had some pretty awful teachers. After eight years of dreadful
French classes, I had developped a serious aversion to the language and even though I
passed all of my tests for it, I never got around to communicating in it fluently. My
passive knowledge of the language (especially reading skills) is rather okay, but I can
hardly manage to produce anything substantial. I can give someone directions if I have
to, I can buy things, ask where someone's from and the likes,... That's about the size
of it. I've decided I need to improve my French drastically at some point, since my
country is bilingual and French is one of the two official languages. Even though I
live in the Dutch part, a decent knowledge of French is required for many different
jobs. Other than that, I can manage to understand some written German, since it's so
close to my native language, but I've never actually learned any German.
I kicked off with Japanese. I think it's a beautiful language and I would simply love
to able to watch for example Full Metal Alchemist without the subtitles one day. I have
some friends who speak Japanese as well, and I figured I needed something entirely new.
I need a challenge in my life, because things have been getting rather boring lately.
I'm working with Pimsleur, which suits my learning style really well. I've only started
this week, but so far so good. I'm enjoying it and I already find myself holding mini-
conversations with the mirror and occasionally answering my boyfriend in Japanese when
he asks me how I'm doing and so on.
I have a "language bucket list", and I hope that, as I get on with it, I will continue
to want to learn new things and add to that list. As for now, languages I most
definitely want to learn are Japanese, French, German, Hindi, Italian and Swedish (not
necessarily in that order ;))
I will no doubt have a great time here, and if anyone needs help with Dutch, you now
know where to find me.

Hi Amelie! Japanese IS an awesome language isn't it? Full Metal Alchemist is also great. I like watching animes because I do catch vocab work here and there, but dramas are better in helping me get a feel of more authentic Japanese (Naruto's Dattebayo! doesn't really help).
