I started learning Russian last fall. It's been a strange little ride for me since
then, because I only started just taking evening classes - I am a university student, and if I don't have motivation or time to work on this sort of thing, then I wanted the freedom to do that - and the evening classes seemed to go at a really slow tempo (something I didn't mind a priori, but grew increasingly frustrated with). In response, I started searching for ways to improve my Russian on my own. I had study material belonging to the course (it used a Dutch-Russian textbook and an English- Russian workbook, based on the Ruslan company). The material in the book was not bad, but it was really quite limited and I found that because we were not even going to cover the entirety in class this year, that I should really need to supplement it with something else. Luckily, I've found plenty of other materials online. I've decided, for now, to use the Teach Yourself: Complete Russian study materials for now. This log is meant to document my progress in Russian using that and the aforementioned classes. I have now covered Unit One of the TY book - it was fairly identical to the first lesson in Ruslan 1 - covering material I already knew, but mostly the grammar in a really much more thorough way. Ruslan really skirted the gender of nouns for a while, and also the possessive pronouns - TY gives me a comprehensive overview. I ran through the lesson quite quickly and found I could easily understand the entire dialogue and do the exercises. I am sure it will get harder quite soon, but it's good to know that at least the very basics are working - making possessives agree with gender, and greetings and such, are already ingrained in my brain. I will review it, though - I keep forgetting that you have to use Вот он/она/оно/они a lot. As for now, I know who I am, and I shall introduce myself in a few short Russian sentences: Меня зовут Ёрн ван Схайк. Я голландец. Я из Пейнакера. Я студент университета Делфта. Мне 22 лет. Я люблю футбол и мызика. У меня есть семья. У меня есть брат и мать и отец. I am sorry, but I am going to cover verbs soon. We did cover genitive already though in class for a few prepositions, and the locative. You used the word лет, while I - года. Then I wrote numbers in words.

Is there anything wrong with using the word лет instead? I checked my textbook and it definitely states лет.

I don't know if you've learned about the cases yet, but when it comes to numbers, the rule is: 1 - год, месяц, ... (nomminative case) 2,3,4 - года, месяца (genitive case - singular) 5,6,...20 - лет, месяцев (genitive case - plural) And that goes on for every number with that ending. For example: - 21, 31, 41 will always be год. - 22,23,24,32,33,34,42,43,44 will always be года. - 25,26,27,28,29,30,35,36...etc, will always be лет.
