Today was mostly Hebrew, yesterday was mostly job stuff (but managed some Korean on the
train). Maybe tomorrow I will be able to continue my march towards language fluency, in Hebrew! Not so much going on, in other words. Today I planned to study, but nothing came of it and I ended up just working and doing
other things. Among these other things was a revelatory discovery - I mentioned in passing to someone that I used to write poetry years ago. I haven't written anything in years. Mostly because poetry is related to mood (and mine has to be dark to write) but also because my life changed for the better at that point. So I stopped, and I haven't written anything of note for years now. However, the mentioning made me trawl through the archives of my poetry document (which I found intact). I remembered the poetry I had written, but looking through it you are looking through a mirror which shows something or someone that should have been you, but is not you. So I read through them and constantly had the feeling of "was this me who wrote this? Did I do this?". But now for the linguistic aspect - the interesting part of my poetry is that, clearly, I must have had a deep-seated hatred against my native language at the time, because all of the things I wrote (with one or two exceptions) are written in English (although I used a few Latin quotations). I cannot cite the whole document to you (150 pages - I don't believe it myself) but I'll give you one poem I wrote that I liked: The Way I Die I watched the last eagle fly into the sky spread your wings, my friend, before you fall swerve around the cities before you hit the wall and just before you're taken down by their guns you'll scream: "please tell me this isn't the way I die" or you could be on the beach tanning in the sun maybe you'll even go for a swim in the sea tonight don't notice the tsunami they predicted for you don't start sprinting until the waves run you through you'll scream: "why does this have to be the way I die?" or maybe the bullets fly at you left and right clad in green you fight in some deserted dry plain with only hostility and burned down oil rigs to gain they'll shoot at you 'cause you don't fight in God's name make you scream: "don't let this be the way I die" and I hope you're not 90 sitting on an old bench stuck with diabetes arthritis and a filthy stench they'll feed you liquids but you don't taste the mess body too broken down to feel your children's caress only whispering: "might this be the way I die?" so when it's time for you to leave this rotten land I hope you'll think of the very last words I said maybe you'll have a fate beating some of the best but don't think you'll be laid gracefully to rest burning you'll howl "Why can't I decide the way I die?" 7 persons have voted this message useful | |||

You haven't told me that there are 150 pages, hehe.
Speaking of poem, one can cry after that. Stunning. I don't have the actual hate towards my native language, but I wish I could use English that... somewhat artistically someday. Though I'm more of prose-writing person. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Today I did the damnedest of things - I wrote an application letter in Russian. That is
the first time I did something like this, so I enlisted someone to help me correct my Russian, but I wrote it nonetheless. Anyways, the position I applied to is in Novosibirsk, so if I get that then Siberia it is! (And I prefer Siberia to Moscow so I'd be totally okay with that). How on earth did you get to remember all the hebrew letters and how long did it take you? I mean to really, automatically recognize and use them. Sorry, I got a bit frustrated. I am starting with Hebrew and you seem to be the only other member studying it. 1 person has voted this message useful |
