I only joined recently but have already written a whole load of posts lol! I thought I'd introduce myself seeing as others have done so and it's a nice way of getting to know who's on the forum.
I'm a pianist and have mostly worked as a ballet accompanist, occasionally with instrumentalists too. In that type of work you get to meet a lot of people and observe them. I've always found people and behaviour very interesting, and also how we communicate, be it through language, music, dance or whatever.
Last year I decided to do some further study and chose music therapy. Before deciding on that subject I visited a few places in England and abroad where people I've met over the years work as music therapists, and somehow the experiences changed me. Rather than watching dancers strive for perfection, I was seeing people struggle with every day tasks, things most of us take for granted. Of course most relevant to this forum is the use of language to communicate, but also things like differentiating reality from an inner world of hallucination and delusion. It's so terrifying if you think about it. I'd like to work with people who have mental illness and emotional, developmental problems, and music seems to have something special.
Some months ago a person I met in one of the places I visited and where I hope to do some training next September, told me about this forum. I draw inspiration from the thought that I could help her, and others like her. In order to do that, I not only need to study hard and get qualified as a music therapist, but if I want to do some of my training there I also need to learn French! I can sort of understand it, but speaking is another matter. They are used to having foreign students and therapists but are strict about everyone's French being at least B2 if not C1. I can often travel over, so theoretically I could get some good language immersion.
I've already learned a lot from some people here, and look forward to learning a lot more. Internet forums are such a great way of communicating with people you'd never otherwise meet.
See you around the forum :-)
Jenny x
PS I forgot to say: I'm English, from the London area. I'd really like to learn how to teach English so if anyone here would like any help with it, I'd be happy to assist and receive your feedback!

Thanks, there are some great people here, and so many really interesting threads! It's like reading a good book, you just can't put it down.
But lol yes, that wasn't really my aim to come crashing in like I did tbh but I'm abroad this week and had expected to be busy but ended up with loads of free time, so after having read things for a while, decided to actually join. The forum seems to have got much quieter recently so my number of posts is more noticeable than it would have been before, then I'll be back at work next week so that'll force me away ;-)
Wondering if I should be concerned about the unqualified noun "impression"... ;-)

I was wondering why you were so interested in autism and mental illness. Now I know.
43 posts in 4 days is definitely a lot. I think I was here for several years before making that many posts.
The forum does have its quiet periods. It's a little disappointing when you check in on active topics and there are only a few new posts since last time. However, there are some very active periods as well. In December when people were choosing TAC teams, we were quite active. And sometimes people get a little crazy in some of the games in the multilingual lounge.

Yes my post count is totally OTT but I won't be writing much once I get back to England next week. Tbh I hadn't intended to ask people about their experiences of autism / mental illness although due to meeting friends of friends and so on, I am very interested in it all. I met some wonderful people who I've got to know a bit over the past year, but I have no real knowledge or understanding of these things yet.
It was striking how many posters around this forum said they had Asperger's. I was interested to find out if there was often that connection, languages and Asperger's. The person who originally told me about the forum had a different psychiatric diagnosis, but is very focussed on languages too, and the piano, which was really cool.
Tanya's thread discussing whether autistic people learn languages better, and other threads where posters had mentioned having Asperger's or other things made me think it might be OK to ask. In every day life it would seem too personal, but here it's more anonymous and nobody has to reply, but at the same time you can have really interesting "conversations". It combines the two things I hope to learn about, the other being French and possibly Italian. I had 5 years of French at school but my level's nowhere near what it has to be. Learning French was actually more why I joined!
The TAC area looks pretty busy, the teams have really got going! Skyping with each other sounds good, especially if the various team members can help each other out with the languages they're learning.
