I've been lurking for quite a while around here, soaking up opinions and information. I
figured it was about time to make my introductions so we can stop being complete
strangers. :)
Anyways... Hi. I'm Mark. How do you do?
I've always been interested in languages. Unfortunately, I'm also easily distracted by
shiny things. ("Italian's pretty! ooohhh! Look at that written Arabic!" And then a week
later, "Ooohh! Look at Gaelic's impossible spelling!" Three days later, "Ooohh! Kanji!"
Etc etc.)
Except for some high school Russian, I never really learned how to say anything.... But
I had fun.
After a few years of forgetting about languages all together, I inexplicably decided to
learn French, as opposed to learning about French. I've been totally focused on it for
months now to the extent that my life allows (single dad, blah blah blah...) I started
with FSI French Phonology and Anki and random internet finds. The FSI basic course,
however, challenged my focus very early on. So, now I'm recently on to Assimil 'With
Ease. I quite like it, thus far.
The existence of this forum has somehow helped me maintain my focus, despite all the
interesting and distracting tidbits about other languages to be found here. I think
this forum has helped turn distractions into a serious hit list. Norwegian has caught
my eye/ear... And I work with a lot of Bosnians.... But I'll get to 'em later:)
Before too long here, I'm going to have to set up a blog and see if I can spew nonsense
in French as I'm wont to do in English.
That being said, I should stop typing...
Cheers,
Mark

Welcome to the forum, @markdmtj! Until you learn your first foreign language to a high level, try to avoid "wanderlust" like the plague. It has been the end of many a language learner's attempts to learn a language. Resistance is not futile. Those other languages aren't going to go away in the meantime. There's no "sell by" date on a language. They'll always be there for you to attempt later. Keep your eyes on the prize and bonne chance.

:D no worries. I know exactly how wandering halts all progress for
me. I've got loads of experience in standing still:)
Besides, I'm having far too much fun feeling my progress. Also, I
decided that if I ever do aim at an L3, it'll have to wait until I'm
comfortable enough to start it through French. That seems like a
reward and a deterrent bundled together. So it's worked so far.
Now all that's left is everything else.
