I did not stumble upon noticing the existence of this subforum till Fasulye informed me
that each new member has a fair chance of posting and introducing themselves about
their passion in the study of various languages one can encounter through the life.
Anyway, I hope it is not too late to ask for skype exchanges as I was enrolled in both
French and German introductory courses this semester and I do need a bit of 'honing' on
both, given Sydney abounds mostly with English-speaking people....I was looking for
people who are equally interested like me in knowing how to speak another language and
I guess we can mutually benefit from any future exchanges once we make contact with
each other.

Possibly in 'return' for your favour, I am myself a mandarin speaker and Shanghainese
speaker for those who are a fan of this dialect :) Francophone & German-speaking
Sydneysiders would be even more appreciated!

Kind regards,
Jamie

Man, Shanghainese? It's such an awesome language. You should add it to your profile. I'd be so taking you up on that offer if I wasn't too busy with Spanish and Cantonese at the moment. I could do with some refreshing of my French, too. So I'm tempted, but I don't have enough time at the moment. I hope you stick around and participate in the discussions here (I'd love to learn more about Shanghainese!).

Oh, and welcome!

That's a good introduction, Jamie! Welcome to the forum officially! So you have two Chinese languages to offer for your Skype exchange. I wish you good luck, as there are several students of at least Mandarin in this forum.

Welcome to the forum, Jamie! Are you living in Sydney, Australia? When I lived there, I was amazed at the city's diversity in languages. There's a writer in New York, Ellen Jovin, who's been blogging about learning the languages of New York City. I'd be willing to bet that someone in Sydney could give her a run for her money. Italian, Greek, Spanish, Vietnamese, Sinhala, Bangla, Hindi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Indonesian, Javanese, Japanese- the list just goes on and on. You have so many opportunities to learn and practice with native speakers without ever having to leave your city. Good luck with your studies. I look forward to reading your posts.

Thank you all for your warm welcome! Well, I guess immersing yourself into the local environment by learning the language (English) local natives speak is one thing, on the other hand, finding someone who is willing to give some linguistic exchanges with you for the sake of expanding their own language arsenal can be quite different, honestly the reason I said that is because even most of my peers on campus are monolinguals who are reluctant to learn new languages unless the circumstances specify the need to do so (ie, overseas students like myself).... In the end, it's your own study, right? I suppose that's why I kind of hoping to meet language learners via Internet.

Cheers to all,
Jamie
