Hello
I have been lurking here for a while and just registered the other day
I have been living in Korea for 3 years but only studying Korean for just over one year. I would put my level at
upper beginner/very low intermediate. The most difficult part for me is listening
I have used various methods over the last year- language exchanges, a University course, a private academy and a
personal tutor. These days I am studying alone, trying to get my Vocab up to an acceptable level. For this I am
using a combination of the Gold List method and the Memrise website. I also use Anki for Hanja which I have just
started.
I am also reading 'the Little Prince' in Korean and always try to watch as many Korean movies as possible but, try as
I might, I cannot get into Korean music.
I am quite interested in the 'Challenges' on this site so if you want to start a Korean one - let me know :)
thanks for all the great posts and I will do my best to contribute something of worth in the future

Welcome to the forums. Nice screen name you have there. ㅋㅋㅋ
What type of music do you listen to in English? K-pop is obviously the most well known of Korean music, but there is plenty of Korean music in all the other common genres as well, it simply doesn't get the level of publicity that pop music gets.

Thanks Warp3 - your posts have been very interesting reading!
Glad you enjoy the name ㅎㅎ
I listen to a wide variety of music in English.
I have found a couple of things that I liked musically (90s era hiphop) like Garion and Big deal but its a bit too fast to understand.
I think if I bite my tongue and listen to Kpop my tongue would be no more
I checked out rollercoaster and windy city too but honestly find them a bit derivative. Any recommendations?

Welcome! Lovely name! I miss 삼겹살... :D
Please don't give up on Korean music yet! I don't know anything about Korean hiphop, but there's some great Indie music out there. I recommend Jaurim (자우림), Deli Spice, 3rd Line Butterfly (3호선 버터플라이), Zitten (짙은) or just check out orienkorean's youtube channel.
We're currently doing the one year challenge with a great team for Korean (part of the East Asian Team) - I'm not sure if it's already too late to join, but you can ask in the team thread. My personal challenge is to pass TOPIK level 4 in October. You're definitely welcome to join that one - seems like we're at a similar level. I don't know when exactly, but there should also be 2 more 6 week challenges this year and I'm sure someone who studies Korean will join.
Good luck with your studies!

Welcome!
I think there's no deadline to join the challenge... I don't really know what the challenge is anyway, apart challenging ourselves, so there's no specific time for that :)
@druckfehler: thanks for the link for music. I really want to discover nice things in Korean music, and I haven't had the chance yet... do you know of folkish bands by any chance? (perhaps PM is better than highjacking this thread?)

I still listen to mostly K-pop, so I can't really personally recommend quite as much in other genres. I have been trying to branch out into Korean rock a bit more (which is closer to what I normally listen to in English), but I've never been much for rap/hip-hop (though I do like Korean rap better than English rap). The Real CZ seems to have a fair bit of knowledge of Korean rap, so hopefully he will post something more useful to you here. A few of the recent posts between CZ and I in my language log here were on that topic, though, so you may want to check that out if you haven't already. However, most of the rap artists mentioned there are quite well-known, so I'd imagine you've already come across their music by now, though.
