Hello everyone,
I arrived here just now after a friend pointed me to this forum. It's wonderful to be here:)
My love for languages started when I was young, our elementary teacher asked us "if you could have one supernatural power, what would it be?"
I exclaimed "I want to know all the languages in the world!"
But alas....I've never been so disciplined and meticulous to learn even ONE properly (expect maybe English in which my skills are O.K.).
So..... let's take it from the start:
I am Greek and a native Greek speaker.
I am *modestly* fluent in English (due to many years of study, daily contact with the language, plus my mom is American).
I studied Swedish for a year, after I went to Sweden for the first time, and fell in love with it! I consider myself to be a beginner yet my reading skills är inte så dålig :)
I studied Finnish for a year, because I made Finnish friends, and I was amazed to see how the phonetics of the Greek and Finnish languages are very similar, even though the languages are entirely unrelated. The structure of the language (not being IE, that is) fascinated me. Unfortunately, I suck at Finnish. I can only remember a few phrases, but for some reason, it all comes back when I'm drunk :-)
I studied Sanskrit for two years; I did it just for fun... I saw Sanskrit was offered where I was already studying Swedish and Finnish... and I thought, why the heck not! It was an amazing experience, I loved learning how to read and write Devanagari and we also learnt some basic phrases (conversational ones, that is), and of course read and translated some mantras and excerpts from the Vedas. I think this is about as far as one can go in this language if one doesn't have a lifetime to devote to it.
I also studied French through gymnasium and lyceum (middle school, that is), and even though it is a lovely language....something went wrong. In retrospect, I attribute my failure to learn it, to being severely traumatized by our French teacher. She was a hideous, monstrous soul who liked to sentimentally torture and bully her students in class. My brain must have blocked the language out, therefore....but at least I can understand a lot of what's written, in French. :)
Last but not least:
I very recently lost my job, and I decided to take advantage of the free time I have now, to learn Turkish.
Why Turkish?
It's because I'm aspiring to visit my friends in Istanbul for an indefinite period of time, and maybe find a job there, who knows? I love the sound of Turkish and I have two strong assets:
1. Greek language has many loan words from Turkish, so it's not hard for me to understand words I haven't been taught
2. Finnish, which I have been taught, have a similar grammatical structure to Turkish, so it is not hard to understand that either.
I only started self-studying this week...so wish me luck!
P.S. I call myself "Melissaki" because I am like a language bee...I pick a little here...a little there.... of many flowers but never the whole thing! :p

Hi Melissaki,
I saw you had posted on my profile so though I would respond: Welcome to the Forum.
Good luck with your Turkish studies. And keep up your Swedish. If you advance you will see that you can understand a lot of Norwegian and Danish as well - with Scandinavian languages you can almost say you get three for the price of one...

Welcome Melissaki! I like your choice of languages. I hope you will have just as good a time here as I
have, but I also hope for your sake that you will no be quite as addicted!
Oh! And I absolutely adore Greek. I have unfortunately forgotten every word I learned last year, but I will try
again this year.
Kind regards, Cristina
