Out of interest, when you were reading the grammar were you making notes or just reading? I ask because i feel like

making the anki cards so i indefinitely put off reading the grammar/working through exercises, etc. |

I was just reading to get an overview before I started writing.
I have tried adding grammar cards to Anki before and while it works to learn 'grammar facts' I didn't that the facts really helped with production. I've heard good things about using Anki with cloze deletion cards to learn grammar, but I've never done this.
At this point I am just going to keep hitting the reading with the hope that in six months or so something will stick. :)
I am also speaking German on a daily basis so it's not that I am getting no output practice. I'll certainly use this grammar when I start writing. It's a great resource. I just don't have time/desire to study it now.

Just a short update: Over the last few weeks I have been reading the daily newspaper Suddeutsch Zeitung on my phone. The first two weeks were free, and then I bought a 20 euro/month subscription (the free version is limited to 10 articles/week).
I am finding it really helpful to build up vocabulary/grammar as well as an understanding of German culture/politics.
I am now at a level where I can read the paper pretty easily. I look up perhaps 1-2 words per article by highlighting words (in Android) and then automatically looking them up via Google Translate. It's not a perfect system, but it works well enough.
Although I can more or less read articles straight, it's also quite obvious to me how far I am from reading in a completely transparent fashion. There are occasional sentences I don't understand, and more importantly while I understand most of the words/grammar, it's just not yet completely utterly automatic. I have the feeling when I get to that point (in the next year or two?) my speaking should also be quite fluent.

July 2015
In July I read 0 book pages and watched 37 films.
I simply haven't had a lot of time to read books over the last few months. I am continuing to read Suddeutsche Zeitung on a daily basis, but didn't read a book this month. I am going to step up the book reading this month so that I can hopefully finish off my current goal of reaching 25000 pages and 1000 films. It would be nice finish off this goal this month as I am not totally into the changes occuring at HTLAL and am not sure how much longer I will active here.
After this I guess my medium-term goal (which will presumably take around 3-5 years) is to get to 50000 pages and 2000 films.
Books
No books read this month.

Patrick, I would very much regret to see you leave the HTLAL community. I always appreciated your thoughtful contributions, and I'm certainly not the only one.

Patrick, I add my voice to the chorus. I have been reading your log for a very long time. I always look forward to seeing it. I hope you will stay with the community of which you are such a valuable part. Some day, I may start learning German and I'm going to need your help.
