I recently heard of Boris Shekhtman, who is pretty renowned in Russian learning circles, and found that he'd copublished a book in 2005. The name is: Achieving Success in Second Language Acquisition, by Leaver, Ehrman, and Shekhtman.
This book is a gold mine. Find it. You can get an idea of Shekhtman's teaching style from an easily found New York Times article about him [An Archipelago Called Russian]. I don't feel any particular affinity towards it, which is why I found this book so surprising. It covers nearly every aspect of language learning, up to high-proficiency, and is clean and accessible. It's also easily adaptable to independent learners, by just ignoring the classroom-based bits. Particularly illuminating to the forum would be the sections of learning style and the strategies that resonate with them. Contents: Part I: Learning 1 Planning foreign-language study 2 Understanding the role of cognition in the learning process 3 Learning styles and learning strategies 4 Understanding feelings and personality in language learning 5 Interpersonal dynamics in the learning process Part II: Language 6 Verbal language 7 Sociolinguistics: the right expression 8 Unspoken communication Part III: Independence 9 Self-regulation and learner autonomy 10 Controlling spoken and written communication Epilogue: from here to there: attaining near-native proficiency I requested this from an academic library and about halfway through it. Since June, 2010, I have been studying with Boris on a regular basis. He is teaching me his method and training me as a teacher and course developer.
This man is the real deal. Anyone who wishes to learn to speak Russian in a very short time would be well advised to spend time with him. He has trained over 14 NY Times journalists to function in Russian. In addition, he has done this for CNN, the State Dept., Armed Forces and many other entities. I shall be giving a public presentation in a few weeks before a group of Russian speakers with a question follow-up . I will know the subject matter of the presentation but not the details of how it will be expressed. This after a total of exactly 117 hours of instruction from him. Russian native-speakers refuse to believe that I haven't studied the language for many years. I have never visited any Russian speaking territory. It is the method. It is phenomenal. This book is listed on Amazon and has the "look inside" option activated. I'm reading parts of it right now.

Suspect it will be worth the price, time and effort. The ideas in the prologue are very ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis). The island mentioned, in the NY Times article, is along the lines of something that I’ve been thinking about...doing what basically amounts to a Toastmasters speech in Mandarin. The idea of one long island seemed a bit odd. So I did some poking around on the internet and found http://www.learnetarium.com/. It talks a little more about the islands, plural. There are multiple speeches which makes more sense. 1 person has voted this message useful |
