Almost all Russian literature (both classics and modern authors) are available on-line. The struggle for copyright is still being lost by authors and publishers...
As to other authors not mentioned here, try Bulgakov. And only his masterpiece "Мастер и Маргарита", but also his other great works like "Собачье сердце", "Белая гвардия" (about the initial period of soviet Russia). And also his awesome short stories. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I know that all text are available online, I use lib.ru all the time ;) I do prefer real books though, and I'm a bit of a collector. So... I dunno if tricoteuse still needs recommendations... but anyway, here go my Russian faves:
Борис Васильев - "А зори здесь тихие", "В списках не значился"/Boris Vasilyev, "The Dawns Here Are Quiet", "He Was Not Listed" Those are about WWII or the Great Patriotic War. I basically love Vasilyev's prose - it's short, light, modern, completely matter-of-fact, and not devoid of humour. Антон Чехов - короткие рассказы/Chekhov's humorous short stories. I've got two compilation books of them, they are a real treat. And I don't mean "The Lady With A Dog" and other longer-type stories, but those that are really short - just a page or two, like "The Horse's Surname", "The Letter To A Learned Neighbour", etc. "Лошадиная фамилия" -- here "Письмо к ученому соседу" -- here "Ночи на клаббище" (one of my favourites) and others -- here http://www.lib.ru/LITRA/CHEHOW/ Гончаров "Обломов"/Goncharov "Oblomov" - a classic about a very lazy man. Don't know why I like it, s'pose it's because I'm lazy :) here Куприн "Поединок"/Kuprin "The Duel" - liked it as a teenager a lot. http://www.lib.ru/LITRA/KUPRIN/duel.txt Шолохов "Тихий Дон"/Sholokhov "Quiet Flows The Don" - that's a very long, four-volume saga about the 1917 revolution and how it affected the lives of the Don cossacks. This is 20-th century "War And Peace", but rather more exciting, violent and dramatic. Books 1,2 Books 3,4 Борис Полевой "Повесть о настоящем человеке"/Boris Polevoy "Story of a Real Man" - based on a real story of a WWII fighter pilot. http://www.lib.ru/PROZA/POLEWOJ/chelowek.txt A non-fiction book I've recently read about Russian women who fought in the Red Army during WWII - Светлана Алексиевич "У войны не женское лицо"/Svetlana Alexievich "War's Unwomanly Face" http://www.lib.ru/NEWPROZA/ALEKSIEWICH/zhensk.txt And I still love some children's authors which I'd recommend to anybody who starts learning Russian - Драгунский "Денискины рассказы", Носов "Мишкина каша", Успенский "Дядя Федор, пес и кот", etc. Well, this is getting rather long, so I'd better stop. Most of those were the books that I read in the tender teenage years and they made quite an impression on me, but later I turned to English and mainly read English/American lit so I couldn't really name any favourite modern Russian authors since I haven't read any of them. It can't believe it took until message 12 to mention the undoubted master of Russian literature, Gogol. Dostoyevsky acknowledged that all of Russian literature sprang from under his Coat. Also, he is one of the most Russian writers I know of. Obviously a genius and quite possibly a saint. You can get an easy introduction to him by watching the newly released version of Taras Bulba.

Urgh, I'm rather afraid of watching it. I just saw one pic and I know I couldn't stand watching such cruelties. Also, I'm not sure of his being "the most Russian" writer, since he's Ukrainian. To be sure, he's considered one of the Russian classics and lived and wrote in Russia (and seeing how long we were united with Ukraine I don't make much distinction between Russians and Ukrainians, anyway) but he was very influenced by his ethnicity - much of the action in "Taras Bulba" happens in Ukraine and the same is true of "Evenings On a Farm Near Dikanka."
