Hi everybody!
Since a few weeks I am thinking about getting a few Spanish novels to improve my understanding. But so far I don't know where to look. I do not want to get Spanish translations, but I would prefer to read original Spanish novels.
So I figured I'd write in this forum, specifying what kinds of topics I like, and see if other people can help me with finding books I might like.
General:
Generally, I like books that have short chapters and that do not go into too much descriptive detail. A negative example is the writing style of Tolkien. Even though I like the background and theme of his books, I hate the way he writes, because the chapters are way too long for me, plus he goes into too much detail while describing the surounding nature.
I prefer Frank Herbert's style, which is (I think) to the point.
Historic novels:
I like to read the novelization of some historic event, preferably a war or a conflict, and I think the degree of historic authenticity is important.
Military fiction:
I like the type of novels, that folks like Tom Clancy write. Again, the degree of realism is important to me!
Science fiction and fantasy:
I LOVE Frank Herbert's Dune series! I am also fascinated by Star Wars and Stargate. So, in short, I like soft science fiction and space operas, with a focus on characters and story, and not technology! I also enjoy reading the Honor Harrington-Series, because of it's realism. Interestingly, I don't like Star Trek at all.
When I say fantasy, I am not talking about elves and dwarfes and orcs and the like, but I mean something like vampires and werewolves (like the World of Darkness role playing games, familiar, anyone?)
I don't know which category that is:
Then, there are books like Forrest Gump and "The five Persons you will meet in Heaven" that I enjoy a lot, but I don't know how to categorize them.
It would be really cool if somebody could help me, giving me the names of a few original Spanish books.
Regards,
Ilhan

Try Elia Barceló she writes science fiction and the books I have read are quite short and easy to read. I can't say if
you'll like her she is not star wars style but not a technology freak either. You can give it a try.

I'm reading La Ciudad de las Bestias by Isabel Allende at the moment. It's in a modern day setting, but it's a sort or light fantasy based around South American shamanic traditions and a group of explorers (journalists etc) in the Amazon -- and obviously there's some sort of cryptozoological beast in there somewhere, but I haven't got that far yet.
Chapters are short, but overall it's average paperback length. I prefer novels to short stories personally: most of the new vocabulary is revealed in the first half of the book, so by the time you reach the climax you shouldn't have to reach for the dictionary....
I'm enjoying it at the moment, and it has sold pretty well in the Spanish-speaking market (which is surely a good thing).

Who are some of the big name authors from Spain?
I would be particularly interested in fantasy/science-fiction or general fiction with
good stories. Novels, not classics or too serious works at this stage.
