Can anyone recommend some useful French books for advanced intermediate learners? I want to build up my vocab. I don't want anything too old since the vocabulary might be outdated.

If you are at an advanced to intermediate level I'd suggest reading some french literature. This will probably bring up your vocabulary and reading skills more than anything. I'd suggest Albert Camus, Marcel Proust, and Hugo for some truly great writers. But anything would do.

For something modern, how about a novel by Guillaume Musso? (His first book was published in 2001). It's not "literature" with a capital L, but it's engrossing and well-written, and the vocabulary is current.

There is a workbook called The Ultimate French Review and Practice put out by McGraw Hill publishing company. It is grammar and vocabulary for people on the intermediate to advanced level. I used it and found it helpful in learning more advanced things. It included things that weren't in my beginner-intermediate courses.

Vocabulary is never, never outdated !
But try Frédéric Beigbeder. He's modern, smart and funny and in the news at the moment.
