So you explored Russian and decided to pick Polish instead? Or do you still study
Russian? I think I'm turning into Philip (damn you, Philip!). I now do an hour of Italian reading, a lesson of Assimil French and a tiny bit each of Russian and Japanese. Dutch is on hold because I read all my books, but I'll get some new ones soon. I keep telling myself that these extra curricular languages I only do for a laugh and I don't care about them at all, probably so that I can feel free of any commitments to them. But the more you do something the more attached you become to it, so I'm not sure how long that is gonna work. My French reading is erratic and accompanied by a lot of self doubt, so that's my reason for doing Assimil: I want to learn all the phonetic rules properly. After that I will go either to a grammar study or back to passive learning. What really irritates me is all the pauses on the recordings, which makes them impractical for shadowing. Unless you remember how long the pause is between each sentence you can't follow along. I wonder if there is a technical method for shortening them that doesn't involve loading the files into Audacity one by one and performing a dozen clicks. I switched to Polish for other reasons, and I will eventually return to Russian, but not yet. But I must say that as Russian helped immensely in understanding the consonant changes of Polish - so Polish helped understand Russian sounds, especially the palatalization, even if they are completely different sounds. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I don't think you can, as ч is already soft in Russian. The way Russians write Marcin is simply Martin (Мартин), at least with Marcin-named people on Wikipedia... The best laid plans and all that. The last couple of months have been hectic in several
different ways, throwing my language plans in upheaval. I've had to slow down my reading and generally scale back my language activities. Nevertheless, there's still always something cooking. I have put in some 420h since the start of this log, so that's something. français +282h italiano +49h nederlands +34h русский +34h 日本語 (nihongo) +28h Dutch is the biggest disappointment (as usual). But I got an invite to enroll in a government sponsored language class. I have to take a test first, which will place me either in the A2 track or the C1 track. The lady I spoke to was pretty confident I would make the latter despite my horrendous speaking skills. Studying for A2 would be a huge waste of time anyway. My modest excursion into Russian is basically at an end for now, for lack of interest. Meanwhile I'm taking some very slow and hesitant steps towards Japanese. Ja, bijna alles was lezen. Ook een beetje tv kijken in Frans. Ik moet toch toevoegen dat mijn koncentratie niet zo goed is nu in de laatste tijd, ik lees veel zonder dat werkelijk te verwerken.
