I just registered on this board. I've been studying languages on and off for about 19 years.
I'm in my twenties. French is my mother tongue, but I'm also fluent in English. I'm currently studying German on a daily basis. I was really interested in Italian and Spanish at some point, but right now I'm trying to focus on German. I took Chinese in college when I was in first year, and I wish I hadn't! The teacher was awful, and she managed to put me off learning Asian languages. English is definitely my favorite language. It's the main language I use when I want to have fun. I ditched French TV and French music a long time ago. I'm using the AJATT method to learn English. I already raked in close to 5,000 hours of listening, and that doesn't include music. Thanks. I still need to learn a lot of vocabulary, though. My English is pretty good, but my vocabulary isn't very extensive.

Read a lot, and be happy that you're a native speaker of French. A lot of high-register vocabulary is cognate.

You're right about higher register vocabulary, but I'm interested in learning words that are more commonplace.
Reading doesn't really help me learn vocabulary, since my brain is mainly auditory. Oh well, I'll see what I can do! 1 person has voted this message useful |
