Hello all,
As you can guess from the title, I'm Dutch. I'm 19 years old and I have been interested in languages for a long time. Whether there's a true polyglot in me I don't know, but I want to atleast expand my current knowledge. I can speak English, because I managed to acquire the skills during my childhood, it was a lot of work though. My goal now is to atleast learn the languages which linguistically border my native language Dutch (Flemish not included). These are of course, German and French. As it stands now, I have both subjects in school, but it doesn't really help me, because you just finish a ''schedule''. The other downside is that I'm autistic. No, I won't rock back and forth in my chair! I can converse like most people, my IQ isn't anything to be ashamed about and I can be a nice guy. I just have trouble with lots of things, including studying. This isn't really helpfull but, it can't be helped. I hope I can get some tips and tricks here, and that I can atleast acquire some (preferably ''complete'') knowledge in German and French. If I offended any rules in this post, my apologies, I checked beforehand, but I can't be a hundred percent I did everything correct. Welcome to the forum, Remster! A lot of people here are fans of the Assimil series of textbooks with audio – have you heard of it? Doing a forum search will provide lots of information. I think it's a pretty good starting point for any language. If you're ready for something more intense, try the FSI courses; for audio-first (if reading too soon tends to mess up your accent) go with Pimsleur as an introduction; or for another variant try the Linguaphone courses. You can find information on all of these by doing a search in the forum here.
My tip would be to stagger your learning – don't start German and French at the same time. I'd recommend starting with one, doing it intensively for about six months, and then starting the other one. It might also be helpful to use a different program/system for each language. Do you what your learning style is? Do you like textbooks, audio courses, talking to real people, reading, writing and getting corrections? Once you've figured this out, you might be able to get more specific recommendations from forum members. Best of luck with your languages! 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Welcome to the forums.
I think there is nothing offensive in your post. If you have troubles with studying (you are not the only one here), than learning a language is excellent practice and a great sandbox for experiments on yourself. I don't think the advice on starting one language first will be of any help here, if you have both at school. There are plenty of threads about how to learn languages simultaneosly and what courses to choose for start, just search a bit. And remember the most important thing: Have fun! edit after fasulye's post: sorry if i seemed offensive and making light your trouble when posting first, i oversaw the information about autism (i should learn to read more carefully). i meant there are people with various troubles here from simple bad study habits to people with for exemple dyslexia who are very successfull at learning. i admire you and wish you a lot of fun here. Thank you all, for making me feel welcome here.
Hearing about the fact that other people similar to me have achieved their goals, gets me even more motivated. I'm going to look at myself to grasp my preferred method of studying. I've read all your advices carefully and I will look at a functional way to get myself started. I'm also glad someone finally likes my native language. I wish we hadn't abandoned our case system, we have some left, but it would've been so much easier if we still had them. Thanks again for all your kind words everyone! Do you all perhaps know how much a language program course costs? Are there any free starters? You've given me some names already and I'll be sure to check them out. I have both languages in school, therefore I get atleast some basic training and I can ask my teachers for help. Since I've registered, I've seen '''titles'' such as: Heptaglot, super polyglot etc. It shows what one can achieve when pursuing their passion.
