Hello all, my name is Jack and my account finally activated so I could take part in the Forum’s. I am 38 years old and know no other language but English. However, I have always wanted to learn Chinese.
I tried the Rosetta Stone but always give it up after a few day’s. What is funny is when I start back all the words that it has taught me comes back but I can only remember them while using the program. Perhaps some are saying I’m too old to learn another language. And that’s fine because I like challenges. I will learn to speak Chinese, and I will learn it good enough to speak to a Chinese person in their own language. I plan to use other sources though, after reading all of your reviews on Rosetta Stone I agree with you all. Just wish I had found this Forum before spending $300.00. My plan is to use CD’s while driving around, and eventually get into a yahoo chat room for China to practice my speaking skills. Hello, Jack, I'm Ket and I have been eagerly waiting for the activation as well the last couple of days :-D
I am 42 and trilingual, and I want to learn any and all languages in the world :-D I'm slowly starting to realize that perhaps I could learn one percent of all the languages, but I probably won't be able to remember all of them, but one permille would be nice too :-D You are never too old to do anything. Your ability to learn doesn't diminish by time, on the contrary. Your ability to learn new sounds and phonemes is still there. Your brain is just as capable of learning a new language as it was of learning your first language. My advice to you is to use all the options you can find around you, and there is an ocean of resources in learning Chinese on-line, a lot of it free. Just google "learn Chinese". Just don't give up. A little every day, just fifteen minutes, if you can't do more, but do fifteen minutes. Remember the tortoise and the hare. You can change the method you are using, but don't give up on Chinese. Billions of people have learned to speak Chinese, why not you? :-D And you can sell your Rosetta. Welcome to the forums. Im sure you will eventually learn chinese. Word of advise, make sure you spend more time studying than on the forums. That was a mistake i made for two years :(

I think everyone here is guilty of that to a certain extent. I stopped posting here for a few months and yet I'm back here again. It's like an addiction. To the OP, good luck with your Chinese. As Ketutar said, sell the Rosetta Stone and pick up something like Teach Yourself (with the audio cds), Pimsleur or Assimil. Using chatrooms is definitely a good idea when you have learnt some to practice. Also for learning the tones and basic stuff, be sure to check out ChinesePod online (quite a few on here recommend it) and thats free for all the beginner materials. Thanks to all of you for the Welcome’s. I got the Michel Thomas Method it has 8 CD’s. Each one seems to be just over an hour long. Which incidentally is the same amount of time it takes me to drive home from work. I listened to CD 1 today, it dealt on the 4 different tones, I guess 5 if you count the neutral tone.
I like the way the sentence structure stays the same no matter if you’re making a statement or asking a question. But those tones will either make me or break me. I’m a hillbilly so my accent doesn’t help much. Anyway I plan to use these CD’s and then purchase the Pimsleur or Assimil program to extend my vocabulary. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||
