Yes, if anybody still remembers or cares that this log exists, I am back. Since I last posted here I haven't done much language learning at all, but I feel like I want to continue learning Finnish and other languages too.

Aww, I never saw that. Yeah, "I'm back" is highly idiomatic. Tons of non-natives wouldn't use it automatically if it wasn't for the famous "I'll be back" from Terminator :D (or "look who's back, back again...")

takaisin is not colloquial (and it's indeed usually an adverb, I didn't even think that it could be a form of taata). Note that with quotation marks there are actually more hits for "olen palannut".

"tulin takaisin" doesn't sound that idiomatic to me either. if you're using the preteritum you can just say "palasin", unless you actually mean "came back for/to/etc ..." And then there's "olen tullut takaisin".

If you're actually emphasizing that now you're here to stay, the best way is possibly "olen täällä/mukana taas".
