Hey all,
2014 TAC Goal: French B1------>C1
----------------------------------
2013 background:
I was writing details of my 2013 study hours in another area of the forum. I didn't
even realise there was a
TAC going on, had no idea what it was....
2013 summary (French):
457.75 hrs of study (average 1hr 15). This is course hours sitting at my desk at home.
Audio only while commuting or walking sometimes: hours unknown (not counted)
Michel Thomas all 3 levels completed
Learn French with Paul noble completed
Small amount of reading
A few French movies
Listening to some French music at times
A couple of meetups for French speakers
A little use of Yabla videos
----------------------------------
2014:
So French is the sole language i'm focusing on again this year. I have a history of
procrastination and juggling
languages (French,Spanish,Dutch,German) and not really advancing properly in them
(wanderlust).
Goal for 2014, from current B1 to C1
MATERIALS
Current courses:
Assimil NFWE (currently leçon 52)
French in Action (currently leçon 13)
FSI Mastering French Level 1 (currenlty leçon 3)
Fluenz French (currently level 3, leçon 8)
Hugo French in 3 months (currently reviewing)
Other course options that I have access to:
Assimil Using French
Assimil Business French
Tell me more (including advanced level)
Vis à Vis
Hugo Advanced
Colloquial French (completed, will review)
Colloquial French 2
another I can't remember the name of
Reading:
Think French & Bien-dire for reading practice & some other ebooks, audio books, and
paperbacks
Audio courses
Linguaphone French all Talk (currently on CD3 out of 16)
Pimsleur (levels 3 & 4 to be completed in 2014)
Rocket French (all levels)
will likely listen to FIA,Assimil podcasts perhaps etc in car after the above complete
Other
Yabla,
French movies,
Meetups,
Games/apps (don't really use at this stage)
?Skype exchange or sth similar?
I'm a perfectionist so advancing through my courses I've noted I'm definitely slower
than most would
progress. I do want to make C2 one day, but this year I'm hoping to get as close to C1
as I possibly can.
I'm planning to sit a test in March, not really sure yet either a B1 or B2 test
depending on where I'm up to at
that stage and how I fair on quick oral test. After that I believe I can sit another
test in November... we'll see.
My wife is pregnant and we're having a baby late April so I'd imagine my study hours
will decrease thereafter.
In the meantime I'm going on a crazy mission.

Zut! Mais qu'est-ce que je peux faire? Ben, je vais continuer bien sûr!

I'm on the second French TAC team and I just wanted to let you know I'll be following your log. Sorry to hear about your flash cards!
I was amazed at the long list of formal programs/materials you use or have completed. If you ever feel like discussing your opinions of the individual programs or describing how you use them together, I'd be very interested.
Bon courage!

Merci BonneVivante. Yeah it's a bit of a drag the loss of FC's. As for the long list of programs. One could say
i'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to language learning courses. I did many years of procrastinating
(wasting so much time) on and off and in that time would buy buy programs/courses among other things to
'prepare' for my planned studies which most of the time never got off the ground or went the way i had
imagined in my little world of idealism. Now I cannot justify not using them. These methods have been
criticised by quite a few ppl and for good reason. But having spent the $ and being a perfectionist I feel it's a
must to get through them and finally find myself out in the open fields of greener pastures some day. Getting
back to the FC's. Do you use them? I find them often more of a hinderance than a useful study aid. They cost
me too much time. Nonetheless I like having a 'record' of what i've learned as I tend to enter all new
words/idioms/grammatical concepts that I come across into my one deck. Happy to give opinions on
programs, ask away :)

I'm just saying hi, as a fellow member of the 2nd French TAC team. Like you, I have a history of collecting courses... it's almost like I feel buying the course will teach me the language!
Are you doing anything with FIA, other than watching the videos?
