Hi Straya, I was only talking about this to my wife just the other day. For French I have two equal favourites for different reasons: French in Action When all components are used this is the most comprehensive course I've used for French. It has grammar and pronunciation exercises, reading, watching and listening all in extensive amounts. The amount of work that has gone into producing this course is insane. Everything is thorough and there's a lot of it. The story is quite engaging too, I really enjoy that fun side of it as well. Assimil New French with Ease This is my equal favourite for almost in part seemingly opposite reasons. Where FIA can almost overwhelm with its sheer size, Assimil lesson's are short, concise yet effective and enjoyable, and give a sense of relatively speedy progress. The grammar is not too heavy either, it's an excellent balance. I really enjoy it! Destinos This Spanish course is easily my favourite language course across all languages. It's basically the French in Action of Spanish. Again I used all components (CD rom not really necessary nor recommended). Ditto to FIA- ie this course has everything and when I've used it I have progressed incredibly quickly. I actually found the story more engaging than FIA perhaps as it visits numerous Spanish speaking countries in pursuit of an intriguing mystery. I've only made it halfway through both FIA and Destinos (completed lesson 26 in both). To be fair, for me personally learning basic/intermediate French has always seemed like something I've had to work hard at, have analysed more deeply and thus treaded more hesitantly and slowly as my critical mind verifies everthing I learn. Basic Spanish especially via Destinos always felt smoother and quicker and therefore more enjoyable. The 6WC is so much more suited to my current rediculous methods than the SC. I really should be doing a mixture of activites. This is one-dimensional study all the way. You see I'm just striving to get through the massive list of courses I have - hence the hours logged. A run for my franc hey? (I wish they were still on the franc- stupid Eurozone!) anyway right now i'm acting like I've just robbed a bank and i'm running as fast as I can. Catch me if you can..... not... !!! ahahahahaha (evil laugh rears it's embarrassing ugly head again). I didn't quite make 7hrs on the first day, 4 hrs on first then got up early and logged a heap more today. Glad to be a part of this 6WC, it's what I need right now to get my butt into gear actually (I really do know i'm making some stupid errors here in repeating too many beginner courses, so don't ever think i'm going to buy this many courses ever again in another language!) Hey me, and other versions of me,
I've been soooo busy I haven't even had time to put up my long-awaited Jan 2015 summary. The phone's been ringing non-stop with demands of this summary. François even had an press-conference asking what's going on... I'm sure you caught it. JANUARY SUMMARY: Course hours: 35hrs 49 min Audio only courses: 27hrs 10min Podcasts: 1hr 36min French Television (EN subtitles or none): 8hrs 25min Flashcards: 10hrs 35min TOTAL FOR JAN : 83hrs 35min DAILY AVG FOR JAN: 2hrs 41min Jan started slow with family visitors which was great fun. The middle was extremely studious, whereas the end of Jan I backed off a little. ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------- I have been very busy with the 6WC lately and finding it quite frankly tough. I've been pushing my self more than usual and today I kinda hit a small wall and backed off on pressuring myself in the morning. I'm not sure whether I'll continue my 6am starts, and might move them to 7am and cut back an hour to what I was doing before, as 11pm to sleep on avg has me suffering a little from tiredness with a day that's filled with much more than just language study. But the idea of getting through some extra course work is pushing me on, and i'm wondering if I'll just adjust eventually to a little less sleep. Perhaps I'll just try it as best I can for the 6WC and decide at the end if I'll continue, as I guess as they say that's what the 6WC is good for- developing better study/language learning habits. ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------- Political slanted talk follows... feel free to avoid if you please... On a serious note I think it's extremely alarming to see French military policing the streets of Nice after a recent attack there on a few police or military personel. This 'police-state'/'ultra-controlled state' of existence is what they (those in control) are wanting for civilian life everywhere in future. The media spreads fear and people have themselves scared and wanting extra protection. This is where media = danger (propaganda + over-exaggerated fear spreading threats justified by whatever attack). Let's face it, people get stabbed, raped, murdered (very unfortunately) on a regular basis all over the world- which in itself is absolutely appauling, but to react to this latest threat (which i'm sure is justified by the Charlie Hebdo situation as well- again a very questionable series of events), is just insane. Humanity is like the frog that wasn't placed in the boiling water put was put in the cool water and slowly brought to boiling point. These changes are occuring very very very gradually. Ever wonder why your grandfather said life was simpler back then, harder perhaps but better... then your father says it, then you're saying it. It's not just because you're maturing, it's because it DOES get worse every generation. Why is humanity so sick? Je ne vois pas en quoi les politiciens de notre ère seraient plus minables ou les politiques de nos jours seraient plus néfastes que ceux et celles qui regnaient il y a 50 ou 100 ans.
