I think you're making the right choice to use native materials right away. Besides
all the learning benefits mentioned by patrickwilken, you focus your language study on
what you want to do, and you find the fun in the language.
I do understand what Ari means about there being more benefit later on, but a bit of
regular listening right from the start will go a long way to helping you develop an
ear for the language. Even when you don't understand 20% you will get used to the
rhythm and flow of the language, and you will be happy when you pick out a few words
or phrases you've recently learned. But as I recommend above, just a bit on a regular
basis should do the trick. |

Wow! A really comprehensive and to the point answer.
I do understand that it is more important to watch actual native content as opposed to
dubbed shows, so I am doing both! I started watching 'Stromberg' a famous German TV
show during my "German-learning" time and all the other TV shows I used to watch
before, I will now watch their German dubbed versions (killing two birds with one
stone!).
About reading books, I thought that I would wait until after I finish Assimil and then
start to intensively work my way through translations of English books I have already
read and like (like Harry Potter). After that I will move on to genuinely native
German books.
When it comes to music, I think that the 'Lyricstraining' site have really nice songs
that are also categorised into Easy/Medium/Hard and I listen to about a couple songs
every day.
Thanks for your insight. Danke viel!
