Week 6 02 Feb - 08 Feb

Spanish
My daily goals for Spanish:
- About 15 pages of La ciudad de las bestias 7/7 (Total: ~142 pages)
- 20 minutes of listening to native media 5/7
- 50 Duolingo XP 7/7 (Total: 400)

It's probably also worth mentioning that I posted an
entry on Lang-8 last week (week 5), which I
forgot to post about here. One one hand I expected more errors, but on the other hand,
I'm disappointed by the high number of stupid errors that I made (mostly gender
disagremenet, or whatever it's called).

Since I have to read a book for German classes, there won't
be any proper weekly goals in Spanish next week except:
- 350 Duolingo XP

Japanese
My daily goals for Japanese:
- 10 new Anki cards 7/7 (Total: 100)
- 20 minutes of listening to native media 5/7
- 3 NHK Easy articles or two "normal" news articles 4/7

For week 7, the only proper weekly goal is:
- 100 New cards

German
Nothing except the usual stuff.

I am going to read Milchgeld by Völker Klüpfer and Michael Kobr in week 6, and I
possibly next week too. It's a shame that the Kindle version has some poor formatting
though. My goal for week 7 is then:
- Read 210 (7×30) pages of Milchgeld.

I'm going to get started on my final year project and continue on the group project at
my uni in week 7, which means that I won't have time for my languages.

Week 7 09 Feb - 15 Feb

I've decided that, starting next week, I will switch between focusing on Spanish and
Japanese. Having many minor, daily goals cause more stress, something I don't really
need this semester. I will be focusing on Spanish next week. However, I will be doing
my Anki reviews (JP) and some Duolingo reviews (ES) every day.

Spanish: I didn't read anything in Spanish this week, as explained in the
previous entry. The only measurable activity this week was Duolingo (408 XP). Next
week I will start with the third Harry Potter book.

Japanese: I figured out that, on my android devices, I can have multiple users,
which allows me to have each device connected to both my British and Japanese Kindle
accounts. The former is a good source of Spanish and German eBooks, whereas the latter
is the ONLY good source for Japanese eBooks.

To warm up my reading skills, I decided to reread the first Harry Potter book. Bear in
mind that I bought it before I found out the trick described in the previous
paragraph. I haven't really done any Japanese reading since the beginning of July last
year, so I'm definitely out of practice.

German: I finished Milchgeld, which was a really interesting book, although it
started kind of slow. That could be said about many Krimis though: it's usually the
last 1/3 or so that keeps me from putting the book down. After reading through it, I
realised how cleverly chosen the title was.

Goals for next week:
- (ES) Listen to 280 (7×40, or ~2 youtube videos per day) minutes of Spanish
- (ES) 350 (7×50) Duolingo XP
- (JP) 100 new Anki Cards

Week 8 16 Feb - 22 Feb

This week's goals:
- (ES) Read 105 pages 176 pages (166%)
- (ES) Listen to 280 minutes of Spanish 387 minutes* (138%)
- (ES) 350 Duolingo XP 446 xp (127%)
- (JP) 100 new Anki Cards 100 cards (100%)

*Minutes are calculated very roughly, e.g. 23:30 => 24 min, and 31:29 => 31 min

This kind of switching between target languages was something that I considered two
years ago as well, but back then the motivation to study Japanese and German was split
10/90 in favour of German. This year, however, I'm more or less equally motivated to
study Japanese and Spanish, making this switching easier.

Spanish: I've noticed that the Harry Potter books are starting to become quite
easy reads, although that might be bacause I've read them before. Ciudad de las
bestias was much more difficult, in my opinion.

Japanse: Although I'm going through a premade deck, my "retention rate" isn't
really that bad. Luckily, I recognise about half of the "new" words that comes up, and
at 100 new cards a week, I'm not really overwhelmed by Anki either.

Goals for next week:
- (JP) Read 105 (7×15) pages
- (JP) Listen to 4:40 (7×0:40**) hours
- (ES) 350 (7×50) Duolingo XP
- (JP) 100 new Anki Cards

**About two episodes of a TV show, or 2 Youtube videos of average length.

EDIT: Since the entry for week 9 disappeared - I'll say that I did make the weekly
goals, but I also deleted the Anki deck because I didn't really see any benefit in
going through a premade deck, where I knew half of the words to begin with. I'll stick
to extensive reading and listening for now.

Also, Kindle for PC now supports Japanese! This means that you can easily copy words
and sentences for dictionary lookups, or even anki cards if you're doing that.

EDIT 2:
For week 9:
- (JP) Read 105 (7×15) pages 145 pages (138%)
- (JP) Listen to 4:40 hours 8:04 (173%)

Week 10 02 Mar - 08 Mar

This week's goals:
- (ES) Read 105 pages 171 pages (163%)

(...phew. That took me at least 20 minutes to write... todavía es difícil
escribir en español)

The aims for next week:
- JP Reading: 105 pages
- JP Listening: 4:40'
- ES Duolingo: 350 XP

Week 11 09 Mar - 15 Mar

This week's goals:
- JP Reading: 105 pages 157 pages (150%)
- JP Listening: 4:40' 6:20' (136%)
- ES Duolingo: 350 XP 525 XP (150%)

(Can't believe that I'm so out of practice that I actually find it easier to write in
Spanish than in Japanese. Spaces are added in there to avoid unwanted spaces splitting
words and those diamonds.)

The aims for next week:
- ES Reading: 105 pages
- ES Listening: 4:40'
- ES Duolingo: 350 XP

Comparing it to trying to study both simultaneously, it is definitely the lesser evil.
Back when my TLs were German and Japanese, it would be impossible to keep up with,
since I was much more motivated to learn German than Japanese. Now the "motivation
ratio" is about 60:40-ish in favour of Spanish, which makes it tolerable.

It's not great, but I couldn't really think of any better way of doing it.

Week 12 16 Mar - 22 Mar

This week's goals:

"desdorados".

---

The aims for next week:
- JP Reading: 105 pages
- JP Listening: 4:40'
- ES Duolingo: 350 XP
