For multiple languages, I like the "boiling water" analogy. If you turn the heat up, and then turn it down, and then up, and then down, it'll take a long time to boil the water because it keeps cooling off. It works much better if you just turn the heat way up until it boils.

Earlier this year I found that I had a lot of trouble doing German / Swedish / Esperanto at the same time, and that it fit well with the water boiling analogy. By dropping German and Esperanto for a short time, I've been able to increase my Swedish ability quite a bit, and that improvement has fueled further motivation. I feel more confident about my progress, which makes me progress more.

In the future, I think I'll be doing only a single language at a time, for at least 4-6 months of hard study before I switch to something else. For an English speaker, this is plenty of time to be able to read full novels, if you can put in the reading and listening time each day. Some things really do work better if you can do them for 3 hours each day, instead of in little tiny increments over an extended time period.
