Fabulous cash prizes! Free Pimsleur! Bragging rights to last a lifetime!
I would have put this thread where it truly belongs, in the Polyglots forum, but I feel it will get more attention here, and that's the real reason I'm posting it.
As many of your probably know, HTLAL's very own Slacker is currently attempting an awesome (in the Biblical sense) and possibly unprecedented feat. I'm not going to tell you what it is. You will want to read the log anyway. I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't already wildly entertaining.
Read it? Good.
Now, I am not normally a betting man, but occasionally an opportunity is just too excellent to miss. This is one of those moments. If gambling is ever going to come to HTLAL, now is the time. Obviously we can't actually bet money (because the currency conversion would get so messy) but I have managed to come up with a few juicy, legal prizes (see below). Interested? Here are the rules.
Rules
Entry: Simply post the number of languages (from one to nine, one number only, not a range like the poll) you believe our hero will complete (completion being defined as at least once through every available lesson in the language) below. Entry will close and lock as soon as Slacker completes his first language. He currently has 22 lessons remaining in Portuguese level three, so you probably have about three weeks left to consider the odds. I will post the official prediction for each participant in this post after the deadline passes.
End of the competition: Christmas Day 2010 or when Slacker says he is beat, whichever comes first.
Tiebreak procedure: I haven't decided yet, but I promise it will be damn entertaining.
Other stuff: Heckling/encouraging in the actual log is of course totally acceptable, expected, and indeed kind of the whole point here.
Prizes
One (1) home-made certificate of prognostic brilliance and one (1) Pimsleur German Level II transcript will be given to every forum member who guesses correctly, regardless of tiebreak results.
One (1) grand prize winner will be named Seer of Seers and will receive prizes possibly including but not limited to:
Mad props
A really special home-made certificate
Five hundred thousand (500,000) dollars (or possibly Reichsmarks)
Time, weather, location, nationality, and views on internet privacy permitting, a chance to meet the man himself and do a Pimsleur lesson of your choice with him.
(This offer is void where prohibited by law or common sense.)

I said 7 or 8. I think if he really works hard and keeps with his method he'll be able to do this.

Please note that if you're actually entering the contest, you need to pick only one number (i.e. 7, not 7-8). The poll just doesn't have enough options to be set up like that.

I say 4!
He will end the Portuguese and with a really great effort will end German aswell. But then he will be pretty tired and will choose Italian for a break and a little of Chinese (mandarin), 'cause it will be the most attractive to him (just my sixth sense). At that point he will be likely to quit all. But because and I believe in humankind I assume he will end those two, aswell. Then he may begin Arabic but soon will realize that his brains are starting to fry... shhhhh....
So, that's it. 4, I think he will accomplish 4 languages.

I'm saying 9 :D It's the optimist in me that says we can all be so crazy and yet slack at the same time and still achieve our goals. :)
