if you want to communicate with:
90%, 95%, 99% of the world's population in their native language? How would have the number of languages that you need changed if you want to communicate with the same percentages of the world's population, and you include the usage of L2? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Just a guess, but if you include people with high L2 skills, I imagine the following would come close to 90%:

It's impossible. This Wikipedia list shows 500+ languages. I did an estimate for 90%. That would mean NOT speaking the language of about 70 million people. You would NOT have to speak the last 270 or so languages listed on this page, which means speaking the first 230 languages listed. Good luck.
