It has been a long time since I have visited these forums although I have been lurking for some weeks. Since I have decided to reemerge I will probably be more active in the near future with my language queries and input. Turning to the topic at hand I was wondering if anyone knew of any online websites such as Ebay or Amazon that sell Don Quixote in the original Spanish and actually include both parts in one book. I have been having some difficulty with this since on Amazon the editions that are available are either just the first tome or there is not enough information available to discern whether it is indeed the entire work. A case in point is their "Don Quixote de la mancha(Grandes clasicos series)" since the product details list the book having 664 pages even though when I read the entire work in English the page quantity definitely went into the thousands. Could there really be that much discrepancy in the amount of pages between the Spanish original(assuming it does include both parts) and the translated English version? In any case I am not even sure if I should be posting this in the general discussion forum though it seemed to be the best choice so please bear with me(dare I say overlook?) if that is the case. I've got two original Spanish (noted) copies that go well over a 1000. One in modern Spanish that's around 700, and one in the original (no notes) with 750 pages. All of them have somewhat large print (about printed Arial 10, I think)

I downloaded the complete text (both books) as a txt-file from the Gutenberg Project:
http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/2000 In all 620 pages in Word (Arial, 10) for the whole book, so the one on Amazon should be complete. On the amazon.co.uk it actually states 1007 pages for the 2nd reprint 1999. Obviously depends on the printing and size of page. I know mine is both books because I checked with the audio I have, last chapter 2nd book of audio and text coincide, same number of chapters, same introductory material to both books as well. If you don't mind reading ebooks, Project Gutenberg is legal, free and has lots and lots of ebooks as well as some audio material, in lots of languages. Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but at what point should one read the original version versus the modern version? I am assuming the original version is analogous to reading Shakespeare, i.e, a lot of archaic language that is difficult to understand and not usable in conversation (unless you hang out with the literati)? 1 person has voted this message useful |
